SECTION 02315
PART 1: GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes: Excavation and placement of materials as shown on the drawings.
1.2 DEFINITIONS
A. Unclassified Excavation: Consists of the material excavation and placement regardless of its nature.
B. Common Excavation: Removal of materials which can be excavated using a rear-mounted, heavy-duty, single-tooth ripping attachment mounted on a crawler tractor with a power rating of 140 net horsepower or less shall be considered common excavation.
C. Rock Excavation: Removal of material is rock excavation when it consists of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock which cannot be excavated with the use of a tractor having a power rating in excess of 170 net horsepower, with a rear-mounted, heavy-duty, single-tooth, ripping attachment.
D. Fill Material: Shall be mineral soil free from peat, frozen material, brush, trees, roots over 2 inches in diameter and rocks over 6 inches in greatest diameter obtained from site during excavation.
PART 2: PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Volumes: Earthwork volume totals of Cut/Fill Material are determined by Volumes Dashboard and using the Grading Group Properties in Civil 3D, 2020.
Volumes are measured between existing ground and finished grade surface, not including the volume of materials for bedding and concrete. Volumes for bedding and concrete are calculated by the width and thickness of the bedding and concrete multiplied by the area of concrete to be placed. Shrink/swell of materials was not considered. Volumes of materials are shown on the drawings.
B. Fill Material: Shall be obtained from the common excavation. Material from excavation shall be used unless it contains ice or frozen earth, debris, high moisture content, or is specified in other sections to be replaced.

PART 3: EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Clearing and Grubbing: Areas within the proposed design area limits that contain vegetation shall be thoroughly cleared and stripped of vegetative matter, rocks, and other objectionable materials. Materials gathered from the clearing and grubbing shall be disposed onsite at a location and method as directed by the Contracting Officer.
B. Grades: Grades when not otherwise indicated shall be level, or uniform slopes. Abrupt change in slopes shall be rounded. Grades shall slope away from structures. At intersections to existing roads or parking, grade uniformly to blend into the adjacent existing grades and/or slopes.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Cut/Fill Material: Fill material shall be spread over the full width of the cross section to a maximum loose thickness of 8 inches and shall be compacted as specified in paragraphs 3.3 A below, before the next layer is spread.
Subgrade within cut sections shall be compacted as specified in paragraphs
3.3 A below prior to placement of bedding material. Materials shall be free of lenses, pockets, streaks, or layers of materials differing substantially in texture or gradation from the surrounding materials.
B. Excess Material: Excess material, if applicable, shall be disposed of onsite at a location as directed by the Contracting Officer. Material shall be graded to match and blend into existing adjacent slopes and grades.
C. Frozen Material: Shall not be placed, nor be placed upon a frozen surface.
3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Compaction: Immediately following final spreading and smoothing, each layer shall be compacted full width. Compaction shall be accomplished by means of a vibratory plate compactor, minimum 3,500 lbs. compacting force, or approved equal. A minimum of two passes shall be made over the entire width of the area and/or continued until the material visibly stops compacting. Add or remove water when necessary to obtain compaction.
PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
4.1 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
A. Units: The work described in this section will not be measured for payment.
