Marine Taxonomic Services, Ltd. History

Marine Taxonomic Services, founded in 1980 and incorporated in 1993, is a certified small business with three offices in Corvallis, Oregon (1980), San Diego, California (2009), and South Lake Tahoe, California (2017).

Our team offers expertise in project management and support services for SCUBA diving and field sampling efforts including sediment and water collections. Our consulting services include study design, field sampling, sample processing, invertebrate sorting, taxonomy, statistical data analysis and interpretation and reporting. With proficient laboratory capabilities to process thousands of samples per year and rigorous quality control procedures, MTS specializes in rapid turnaround of the highest quality dataset. Our firm can work worldwide and has extensive experience working in the Eastern Pacific from the Arctic to Baja California, and has additional experience working in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico.

MTS maintains equipment such as boats, SCUBA gear, fishing nets, benthic sampling equipment, remotely operated vehicles, towed cameras, and sonar mapping systems. Fishing nets such as otter trawls, beach seines, and purse seines are used to sample fish and other organisms in the water column or at the bottom of the ocean, a lake, or stream. SCUBA divers and associated equipment are used to record observations (visually or with specialized cameras) and to implement restoration efforts such as invasive species control or habitat restoration (planting eelgrass and other vegetation). Remotely operated vehicles and towed cameras are used to evaluate and map habitats and resources when it is either more efficient or there are safety concerns relative to using SCUBA divers. Sonar systems help provide means to map resources under water when the project scale is too large to be handled with visual techniques. All field efforts are supported with a multitude of other equipment such as global positioning systems (GPS), electrofishing equipment, and sediment sampling equipment.

MTS and its staff are exceptionally qualified to work in marine and aquatic environments. Our four decade history means we were working in these environments as the modern fields of marine and aquatic sciences were being developed. We are not only capable of working in these environments but we understand the unique challenges and the larger historical context within which our work is performed. This helps us integrate scientific information within the relative regulatory framework within which we work.
