The contractor must provide the software support and services needed to appropriately maintain the VISN 23 Alaris System Infusion Pumps. CareFusion Solutions, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Becton Dickinson and Company (BD), is the exclusive manufacturer and distributor/servicer of Alaris® products and software including Guardrails® Point-of- Care Software, Alaris® Pump Module, Alaris® Syringe Module, Alaris® PCA Module and Next Generation Alaris® PC Unit.
This contract with Becton Dickinson (BD)/CAREFUSION SOLUTIONS, LLC (CareFusion) provides comprehensive Software Management Services for the legacy VISN 23 Alaris System Infusion Pumps. The services include licensing, software and server hardware support, technical support (both remote and on-site), training, and system enhancements, all aimed at ensuring VA facilities maintain the most current and secure infusion pump software to support veteran healthcare.
Software updates and patches cannot be obtained without a service contract. Receiving and implementing these updates ensures the latest versions are installed timely to maintain security and operations.
The Alaris System manager software is an essential software proposed to prevent deviations in the infusion programming and warn the users by maintaining drug library standards. A drug library contains drug parameters, dosing limits (minimum and maximum dose), duration rate, and available concentrations.
Use of Alaris system manager results in less medication administration errors decreasing the potential costs associated with medication administration errors. It has been found that IV administration adverse drug events (ADEs) may result in $6647 greater costs and 4.8-day longer stays per patient in the inpatient setting. This software is used to ensure that Veterans being treated for acute medical conditions and cancer receive safe and therapeutic doses of vital medications that can result in catastrophic harm when administered inappropriately.
Becton Dickinson(BD)/CareFusion Solutions, LLC is the manufacturer of the legacy Alaris System Infusion Pumps and has not authorized any other company to provide Alaris SMS at this time. Any maintenance performed by a third party vendor, other than BD/Carefusion (and the subcontractors that it directly utilitizes) would render null and void any existing warranty and be unsupported by BD/Carefusion.
