Statement of Work

Service Care Line:Medical Care Line
Department:Cancer Center
Project:Accreditation Survey for Cancer Program

I. Introduction The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Cancer Program is scheduled to be surveyed on June 2023 by the Commission on Cancer American College of Surgeons. This is a comprehensive on-site survey of the entire cancer program’s compliance level with all applicable standards. The ACoS survey includes:

•Assessment of compliance with all the new standards (Cancer Program Standards 2016: Revised Edition for 2019.) The updated standards (Cancer Program Standars 2020: Optimal Resources for Cancer Care for 2020, 2021, and 2022 activities. Data for these years is only found in the historical SAR).

•Cancer Program Standards 2020 and 2022: Optimal Resources for Cancer Care for 2020 activity. The new SAR will capture 2019, 2020, and 2021 and 2022 information that is needed for survey.

II. Project Scope The Commission on Cancer sets the standards for cancer programs and only approves those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment to their patients and the community. Components required for an approved status include:

· A multidisciplinary Cancer Committee composed of physicians and other health professionals involved in the care of cancer patients and their caregivers

· Monthly Cancer Conferences and professional education

· Physician Credentials

· Quality Improvement Processes

· A Cancer Registry

· Public education and outreach

· Psychosocial Services

· Clinical Research Information

· Rehabilitation Services

· Diagnostic Imaging

· Nutrition Services

· Oncology Nurse Leadership

· Surgical Procedures

· Radiation Oncology Services

Healthcare organizations must undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review every three years, in order to maintain their status as an approved cancer center. Commission on Cancer approved programs represent about 20% of all acute care hospitals, but they diagnose and treat 85% of all cancer patients in the country.

By setting such rigorous standards, the Commission on Cancer ensures that patients receiving treatment from approved programs have access to:

· Quality care close to home

· Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment

· A multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients

· Access to cancer-related information, education, and support

· A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results, and offers lifelong patient follow-up

· Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care

· Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options

A final report of the survey, both written and electronic, will be submitted within 6 weeks, detailing findings of non-compliance, areas of vulnerability, and recommendations for improvement, targeted to bring the facility into compliance with ACoS requirements. A recommended plan of action to clear up all the deficiencies is also included.
