Re: White Mountain Apache Tribe Department of Correctional Facility
Dear Mr. Wilson, Martin White & Griffis (MWG) conducted a site visit of the White Mountain Apache Tribe Department of Correctional Facility on 10/19/2020. In the detention pod areas, we observed the existing condition shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 below. Where roof joists pass through non-bearing concrete masonry walls the original structural detail 230 specifies that a void should be left in these walls around the roof joist and then filled with “compressible material”.
This compressible material is intended to allow the roof joist to naturally move without putting stress on the wall. It appears that the voids around the joists were filled with masonry material which is resisting movement of the roof joists and stressing the masonry material until it cracks and becomes lose.
While this lose masonry material can fall and present an injury risk, MWG believes that there is no risk of this condition causing a greater structural failure of the roof or walls of the building. We suggest that the masonry fill material is removed and replaced with a compressible material as originally detailed. This will allow the joists to naturally move and prevent any further cracking or loosening of masonry material at these locations.
A full report will be produced to address other conditions observed at the facility.
