Runway Friction Tester

Hardware:

‐ Made with corrosion resistant materials ‐ Vehicle Mounted ‐ Ability to be integrated to the framework of the host vehicle ‐ Transferrable between different testing vehicles ‐ Minimizes permanent modifications to the host vehicle ‐ Includes self‐wetting system o Corrosion resistant water tank o Automatically deploys when at speed and switches off when the testing is complete.

o Baffling in the main water tank to reduce water movement.

‐ Designed to be used in winter conditions for snow and ice control friction measurements.

‐ Transportable across surfaces covered with snow and ice onto the measurement surface.

Software:

‐ Rapid ability to fully set up between tests (less than one minute) ‐ Includes web‐based winter condition and RCR (Mu Value) reporting website o Data from friction device is sent to the website directly o Shows RCR values and conditions in real time as testing is being performed o Ability to determine what information is shared with each user group o Ability to communicate and indicate which surfaces are opened and closed

‐ Minimizes operator interaction during the friction survey.

‐ Compatible with Windows computers and Android tablets.

Performance:

‐ Can be operated by one person ‐ Capable of testing in snow and ice conditions at speeds from approximately 15mph to 60mph ‐ Capable of being used year‐round without the use of the self‐wetting system ‐ Complete a minimum of 12,000 tests in a season without replacing the measurement tire ‐ Continuous, accurate, and reliable friction measurements for the entire length of the testing surface ‐ Comply with the FAA‐150‐2500‐30D (Airport and Winter Safety Operations Circular) ‐ Comply with the FAA 150‐5320‐12D (Measurement, Construction and Maintenance of Skid

Resistant Airport Pavement Surfaces) ‐ Comply with Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ICAO standards 9137‐ AN/898 Part 2 Airport service Manual.

‐ Meet general airport and highway safety standards for vehicles and their use.

‐ Unit must work reliably and accurately in temperatures ranging from ‐40 degrees F to 110 degrees F; in ice, snow, slush, dry, and patchy pavement conditions.

‐ Uses an ASTM 501 or ASTM 524.

‐ Capable of automatically providing the operator with average friction values for both a 500 foot

(150 m) and one‐third segment of testing surface length within a 95.5% confidence level.

‐ Provide the average friction value for the entire length of the completed test, or the average of the 3 x 1/3 tests of the surface.

‐ Provide the average friction value for “any distance that has been tested” so that in the case of an emergency abort, a friction value for the portion of the run completed is given.

‐ Can be used to complete testing sections as short as 300 feet.
