Clusters of four barbs having a maximum tip radius of 0.127 mm (0.005") shall be punched 100 mm (4") on center. Barb cluster width shall be 30 mm. Barb clusters shall have a minimum length of 30 mm (1.2"). Barb shall be alternately offset from the tape center line 4 mm - 12 mm (0.15"-0.45").
Adjacent coiled loops shall be alternately clipped together or spot welded at five points of approximately equal radius spacing about the coil loop perimeter. Welded attachments shall withstand a minimum 890N (200 lb) load uniformly distributed about the periphery.
The 750 mm (30") diameter coils and five point uniform radial connections shall interact to produce a concertina coil with a 300 mm (12") opening between adjacent coil loops.
Provide jacketed steel wire rope attached along the entire length of the roll. Attach wire to each coil loop to preset the maximum barbed tape opening and the 12.20 meters (40 feet) plus or minus 0.3 meter (1 foot) length.
WIRE-REINFORCED BARBED TAPE
Barbed Tape Coils shall be 750 mm (30") in diameter. Tape shall be fabricated from ASTM 176 Stainless Steel strip hardened to Rockwell (30 N) 35-40, 0.64 mm (0.025") thick, 25 mm (1") width prior to roll forming.
Clusters of four barbs having a maximum tip radius of 0.127 mm (0.005") shall be punched 100 mm (4") on center. Barb clusters shall have a minimum length of 30 mm (1.2"). Barbs shall be alternately offset from the tape center line 4 mm - 12 mm (0.15"-0.45").
The stainless steel strip shall be permanently cold clenched around a 2.5 mm (0.098") diameter austenitic stainless steel core wire conforming to ASTM A-580, having a minimum tensile strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi). The barbed tape shall have a minimum 230 degree wrap about the core wire. Barbed tape clips placed around the circumference of the tape shall be such that adjacent loops are rigidly fixed, preventing any slippage of one past another at the point of attachment. Clips shall be fabricated from 1.6 x 9.5 mm (0.065"x0.375") stainless steel and capable of withstanding a pull of 890N (200 lb).
INSTALLATION TIES
The Contractor shall use one of the following methods:
Wire Ties used to attach security coils to the chain link fabric, tension wire, and other rows of barbed tape shall be austenitic stainless steel, 175 mm (±25 mm long), [(7" ±1" long)], 1.57mm (16 gauge) thick, twistable ties. No less than three ties shall be used for each 300 mm (1 ft) of installed length of barbed tape used. The wire shall have 3 complete twists. Wire ties shall draw the fence fabric or adjacent coil loops tightly together.
Alternative “Hog Rings” used to attach security coils to the fences shall be 2.5mm (12.5 gauge) stainless steel and shall be used to fasten barbed tape to chain link fabric, tension wire, and other rows of barbed tape. No less than three hog rings shall be used for each 300 mm (1 ft) of installed length of barbed tape. Hog rings shall not be used where electronic detection is an integral part of the fence system.
GROUND STAKES
Ground stakes will be #10M (#3) galvanized reinforcing rods 450 mm (± 25 mm) [(18" ±1")] long with a 180̊ end hook 125 mm (5") in length.
BARBED WIRE
Barbed wire shall be two-strand, 3 mm (0.12") thick, Class 3, meeting the requirements of ASTM A121. Barbs shall be four-point 2.5 mm (0.1") thick aluminized wire interwoven and spaced 100 (4") to 150 mm (6") apart.
EXECUTION
PREPARATION
Surface Conditions: Prior to work of this Section, carefully inspect the installed work of other trades and verify that such work is complete to the point where this installation may properly commence.
Do not proceed with installation in areas of discrepancy until all such discrepancies have been fully resolved.
Proceed with work following placement of herbicide and gravel between security fences.
INSTALLATION
GENERAL
Protective Gear: Mandatory protective gear: hardhats, goggles, gloves and steel toe shoes. Contact manufacture for additional information regarding protective gear.
Installation Equipment: Provide equipment adequate to support and protect the workers while installing coils at heights greater than 1830mm (72") above the finish grade.
Alternative methods are accepted, provided adequate precautions are taken.
Experience: Contractors not familiar with Barbed Tape Installation shall contract with the manufacture in order to have the manufacturer’s representative on the construction site during the initial installation. Installers shall have three years minimum experience. Contractor is to obtain manufacturer’s installation instructions and final inspection services. Contractors shall arrange for these services a minimum of two weeks prior to the date needed.
Install work of this Section in accordance with the following general installation instructions and also with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
WIRE REINFORCED BARBED TAPE
Top of the Fence Installation (Interior, Exterior and Sallyport Fences):
Coils shall be installed horizontally on the approach side of the fence. Stretch out the coil and allow it to rotate (spiral) around its central axis.
Before attaching coils to the fence fabric, inspect the roll for tangles and proper coil spacing.
Locate the coil loops 300mm (12") o.c. and permanently or temporarily secure in place. If temporarily attached follow with another crew and complete the tying operation.
Since the obstacle is tied to the highest point on the fence, allow for off-center tying (above and below tie points). This tying method reduces coil movement; coil movement creates mechanical noise affecting most fence mounted electronic detection systems. Additional ties may be required to reduce any audible noise.
Side of the Fence Installation:
Follow, “Top of the Fence Installation”, for deployment procedures, except that the 300mm (12") o.c. tie points are uniformly placed at the specified height.
Installation sequence will depend upon the security coil configuration.
Adjacent rows are attached one to the other 1220mm (48") o.c.
Tie Points and Attachments:
Tie parallel coil loops to the fence with (3) ties at 300mm (12") o.c. with 16 gauge minimum twistable austenitic stainless steel tie wire. Wires shall be twisted tight drawing the barbed tape and fence fabric together.
Alternative - Large stainless steel hog rings with a minimum cross section of 12.5 gauge may be used, provided the ring wraps completely around barbed tape and wire attached to. Rings must be of adequate strength to prevent opening the ring by pulling on the tape. Hog rings shall not be used where electronic detection is an integral part of the fence system.
Bottom of the Fence Installation:
Follow, “Top of the Fence Installation”, for deployment procedures.
Coils at the base of the fence are installed horizontally in vertical stacks and tied consecutively together.
Adjacent rows within the stack at attached one to the other at 1220mm (48") o.c.
Install the horizontal vertical stack systematically, bottom to top, starting next to the row attached to the fence and work outward.
Splicing:
Symmetrical in shape, each roll has a splicing tail consisting of 4 to 8 barbs. Connect the trailing ends of the preceding coils to the leading end of the following roll by aligning the end coils and matching the clip pattern around the circumference of the two rolls being connected. This will determine the number of barb clusters in the splice.
Tie the overlapping tails together by placing tie wires diagonally across a minimum of two pairs of barb clusters so as not to allow one barb slipping past another.
Complete the splice by placing ties at two other locations diametrically opposite to the splicing tails where clips would have been if manufactured in one continuous roll.
Ground Stakes:
Ground stakes are installed 3m (10') o.c. along the barrier trace and offset 1.5m (5') between rows. Each stake is driven to a depth of 460mm (18"), slightly below ground cover and hidden beneath the stone.
Should the stakes become difficult to install due to soil conditions provide pilot hole 355mm (14") deep with a 16mm (5/8") diameter tapered rod long enough to clear top of coils being worked on.
NON-REINFORCED BARBED TAPE
Top of Fence Installation (Interior, Exterior and Sallyport Fences):
Same as Wire Reinforced Barbed Tape above.
Opposing rows installed on opposite sides of the fence are secured in the same manner as “Sides of the Fence Installation”, except those opposing rows are secured by reaching through the coils.
Side of the Fence Installation:
Same as Wire Reinforced Barbed Tape above.
Tie Points and Attachments:
Same as Wire Reinforced Barbed Tape above.
Bottom of the Fence Installation:
Same as Wire Reinforced Barbed Tape above.
Splicing:
Connect the trailing ends of the preceding roll to the leading end of the following roll.
Each roll is manufactured symmetrical with a small diameter aircraft cable running the entire length of the roll.
Align end coils by matching barbs on each side of the cable connection. Place one or two tie wires diagonally across the cable connections, locking the cable and end coils together. This creates a continuous cable and aligns the remaining barb clusters around the circumference in line with existing spot welds. This gives the appearance of being manufactured in one continuous roll and completes the splice.
Ground Stakes:
Same as Wire Reinforced Barbed Tape above.
INSPECTION
The completed installation shall be inspected and approved by an authorized manufacturer's representative. Provide a certificate of compliance to the Contracting Officer indicating the installation meets or exceeds the manufacturer's written requirements for the application shown. Correct improperly installed work.
