About this file

This document contains Questions and Answers related to a federal contract opportunity for the design and installation of a Fire Suppression System at Housing Quarters #51 at Mount Rushmore National Monument. The contract requires the system to comply with either NFPA 13D (for one- or two-family dwellings) or NFPA 13R (for residential occupancies up to four stories), and the contractor can choose which standard to use. The current water supply at the site is barely sufficient for a 13D system with two sprinkler heads, and would not support a 13R system with four heads. The contractor will be required to provide a design submittal that works in the most cost-effective way while still complying with either 13D or 13R.

Questions and Answers:

16. In response to amendments 1 and 2, stating the design standard is NFPA 13R and not NFPA 13D:

(a) Per NFPA 13D (one- or two-family dwellings, manufactured homes or townhouses):

Two sprinklers heads are required to be calculated. System components do not have to be listed for fire sprinkler use. A fire department connection is not required.

(b) Per NFPA 13R (residential occupancies up to and including four stories):

Four sprinkler heads are required to be calculated. System components must be listed for fire sprinkler use. A fire department connection is required.

• The contractor can use either 13D or 13R. The offeror will still be required to provide the design submittal that will work in the most cost-effective way and still comply with either 13D or 13R for review.

17. Unit 46 was designed and installed per NFPA 13D. The current water supply was barely enough to calculate two sprinkler heads – a +3.3 psi of overage. If two more heads are added to the hydraulic calculation, the current water supply will not be enough to supply the fire sprinkler system.

• The fire suppression system will match unit 46, (installed across the street from 51).
