What is a Slave?

A long time ago in our country, some people were forced to work for others without getting paid. These people were called slaves.

Even slave children were forced to work. The slaves could not choose the work to do and had to do what they were told. Many of the slaves worked on farms.

Would you rather work or play?

Circle the pictures that you like to do and put a box around the pictures that are work.

Created by Wicomico County Board of Education: Ruby Brown; Wicomico County Public Schools staff: Christopher Cuppett, Dr. Roxie Dennis, Adrienne Jenkins, Mary Kinnamon, Marchelle Mills, Estelle Pappas, Teresa Price, and Nicole Williams; NPS: Dr. Diane Miller

Getting to Freedom

Slaves wanted to be free to make their own choices. They heard about a secret network called the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad had people who helped them escape. These people were called conductors.

The Underground Railroad was not a real train. It was a secret network of people and places where slaves called Freedom Seekers, could get help while escaping to freedom. To keep the escape plans secret, railroad terms were used. The safe house was called a depot or station. Conductors would hide, feed, give directions, or guide freedom seekers.
