About this file

This document is a Statement of Requirements for a Gas Chromatograph (GC) to be integrated into a gas delivery system by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Chemical Sciences Division. The GC is required to provide real-time monitoring of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, identify and quantitatively analyze hydrocarbons, detect trace gases, and assess reaction kinetics. The GC must meet specific technical requirements, including an operating range from 2 ppm to 100%, a linear dynamic range from 2 ppm to 5%, the use of micromachined thermal conductivity detectors with internal volumes not exceeding 250 nL per channel, a column oven temperature range up to 180°C, a micromachined injector with no moving parts and injection volumes from 1 to 10 μL, and the ability to handle a sample inlet pressure up to 100 kPa. The GC must also be compatible with the custom physical and electronic requirements of the existing gas delivery system infrastructure.

STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENTS

I. Gas Chromatograph BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Chemical Sciences Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is involved in a project to deliver a testbed for industrial heterogeneous catalysis based on emerging X-ray characterization methods. To achieve this mission, a gas chromatograph (GC) is required to provide real-time monitoring of heterogeneous catalytic reactions and aid in the identification and quantitative analysis of hydrocarbons, detection of trace gases, and assessment of reaction kinetics.

The GC will be integrated into a gas delivery system according to a custom design created by members of the project to perform certain unique functions and must be compatible with the custom physical and electronic requirements of that system. In particular, the existing infrastructure provides only a relatively small space for integrating the GC. These dimensions are called out in the system requirements.

II. SPECIFICATIONS

The Contractor shall provide one (1) analytical instrument system that meets the following minimum technical requirements.

System Requirements:

• The GC unit shall have an operating range from 2 ppm to 100%.

• The GC unit shall have a linear dynamic range from 2 ppm to 5%.

• The GC unit shall use micromachined thermal conductivity detectors with internal volumes of not more than 250 nL per channel.

• The GC shall have a column oven with a temperature range up to 180 °C.

• The GC shall use a micromachined injector with no moving parts and injection volumes from at least 1 to 10 µL.

• The GC’s injector shall include heating to over 100 °C and permit measurements of gases from

0 °C to over 100 °C.

• The GC shall permit a sample inlet pressure up to 100 kPa.

• The GC shall achieve a repeatability of <0.5% RSD.

• The GC unit shall have a capillary column or combination of columns that permit differentiation and quantification of CO, CO2, NO, BTX aromatics, C1-C6 products, ethylene, and acetylene. The GC shall also be compatible with helium and argon carrier gases.

• The GC unit shall accept helium and argon as carrier gases.

• The GC unit shall support communication protocols for digital I/O and control via Modbus-

TCP communication.

• The GC unit shall accommodate changing of columns and modularity by swapping interchangeable column modules among commercially available options (or their equivalent) for the gases listed here or others such as:

o Natural gas o N2 o Hydrocarbons up to C10 o Propylene and propane o SO2

• The GC unit’s width, length, and height shall all be less than 500, 360, and 300 mm, respectively.

• The GC unit’s weight shall not exceed 20 kg.

• The GC unit shall possess a sample flow path made from materials inert with respect to the reactive gases listed above.

• The GC unit shall be capable of sampling from a gas stream with 20 to 60 sccm flowrates.

• The GC unit shall include a display that allows readout and control of the unit.

• The Contractor shall provide a software solution for controlling the unit, data visualization in real time, and data processing. Also, it shall be capable of handling automated sample queues.

• The GC unit must be powered at a voltage compatible with USA standards.

• The GC unit must be UL certified, unless another certification is available that is deemed sufficient by the NIST Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR).

III. DELIVERY

Delivery of the GC shall be within 12 weeks of award to NIST c/o Brookhaven National Lab, Room 111, Building 743, NSLS-II Upton, NY 11973 between the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday with the exception of Federal Holidays.

IV. INSTALLATION

Installation shall include, at a minimum, uncrating/unpacking of all equipment, set-up and hook-up of all equipment, instructions on communicating with instrument from graphical user interface, start-up, and a test-run demonstrating instrument performance adheres to specifications. The Contractor shall provide any specialized tools if needed for installation. The Contractor must provide instructions and remote support for installation. The instrument will operate to manufacturer’s specifications upon installation.

V. WARRANTY

The Contractor shall provide, at a minimum, a one-year warranty for the gas chromatograph and a three-month warranty on accessories and spare parts. The warranty shall cover all parts and labor.

Warranty shall commence upon Government acceptance.

VI. DELIVERABLES

Description Quantit y Due Date Gas Chromatograph 1 Within 12 weeks of award delivered to the COR.

Operations & maintenance manual 1 Within 12 weeks of award.

Remote Installation Support Unlimited

VII. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

The Contractor shall demonstrate that all performance specifications are met upon installation.

VIII. GENERAL INFORMATION

Safety: The Contractor employee shall be responsible for knowing and complying with commercial installation safety prevention regulations. Such regulations include, but are not limited to, general safety, fire prevention, and waste disposal.

Security: NIST is a restricted campus. An identification badge is required for access for entry into buildings and also is shown to the armed Security Police when entering the campus.
