552 - Structural Concrete

SPECIAL PROJECT SPECIFICATION

Section 552. — STRUCTURAL CONCRETE

552.11_05_14_06_01_2005

552.11 Handling and Placing Concrete.

NOTE: This is The Department of Boating and Waterways recommended procedure to produce the required concrete finish. It is up to the Contractor themselves to determine the best way to produce the required concrete finish.

(f) V-Groove Construction Procedure

The consistent experience of the engineering staff of the Department of Boating and Waterways is that the successful accomplishment of satisfactory V-grooves by contractors is a continuing problem. It is not a difficult task, but contractors are consistently overconfident of their skills, abilities, and past experience of finishing concrete on level ground. However, finishing V-grooves on a 12%-15% slope is another matter.

Consequently, it is strongly advised that contractors involved in V-groove finish work on launching ramps pay close attention to the following recommendations:

a. Use a concrete crew of not less than 5 workers including at least 2 finishers.

b. All tools, supplies, equipment and materials are to be on site before beginning placement of concrete.

c. Place concrete and finish one launching lane at a time, maximum width of 15' (up to

20' on single lane ramps).

d. Start early in the day with attention to:

time of year altitude haul distance temperature winds design mix weather forecast climate size of crew

e. Start concrete placement at bottom and work uphill. Some contractors insist on starting at the top and working downhill.

f. Limit placement of concrete to the following maximum rates per hour:

8-10 cu.yd./hour for 6” thick sections

11-13 cu.yd/hour for 8” thick sections

This will result in a production rate of about 30-35 linear feet of 15’ wide launching lane per hour, or an area of about 450-525 square feet.

Page - 25 - of 74

g. Adequately vibrate the concrete every 12” on centers with internal vibrators to eliminate air pockets and to insure full contact with the rebar and construction forms.

Do not over-vibrate as the aggregate will settle to the bottom and waken the launching ramp slab.

h. Screed the wet concrete to the top of the forms using a vibratory power screed, working uphill via hand or gasoline powered winches. Do not attempt to manually drag the screed uphill!

i. Beginning at the appropriate lower corner, begin forming V-grooves at 60 from the longitudinal axis of the ramp. Initially, there will be a triangular area at the very bottom of the ramp within which it will be awkward to use the V-groove tool. However, after progressing up the ramp to the point where the V-groove tool can be used over the full width of the launching lane, the grooving operation will be much easier. Care must be taken to insure the 60 angles on the front and rear of the V- groove tool fit snugly against the forms on each pass of the tool across the wt concrete. It is often helpful to fabricate a couple of smaller V-groove hand tools to use in the tight corners at the top and bottom of the ramp. The offset from side to side of a 15’ wide lane will be about

8’-8”. The use of a straight 20’ length of 2”x6” lumber will be of great assistance in maintaining the correct alignment and provides a guide for running the V-groove tool across the wet concrete. The diagonal distance across the launching lane will be about

17’-4”. When done properly, crisp V-grooves can be formed with only one or two passes of the tool.

j. Vibrate, screed and V-groove one hourly placement of concrete before allowing the next placement. If unexpected delays occur between hourly placements due to equipment problems, traffic, etc., leave the rough edge along the upper side of the last placement generally along the same 60 alignment of the V-grooves. This will eliminate most of the problems of trying to finish both “old” and “new” concrete on the same pass of the finish tool.

SPECIAL PROJECT SPECIFICATION

Section 552. — STRUCTURAL CONCRETE

552.16_05_14_06_01_2005

552.16 Finishing Formed Concrete Surfaces.

(h) Class 8 — V-Groove Launching Ramp Finish.

NOTE: This is The Department of Boating and Waterways recommended procedure to produce the required concrete finish. It is up to the Contractor themselves to determine the best way to produce the required concrete finish.

1. V-grooves are to be 1" x 1", and aligned at 60o to the longitudinal axis of the launching ramp. Larger grooves are sometimes used but are more difficult to walk on. Under no

Page - 26 - of 74 circumstances shall the grooves exceed 1-1/2".

2. A V-groove finish will not only provide good traction, but will also assist in "cleaning" the launching ramp surface in response to boat wakes, wind and storm waves, and rainwater running down the ramp. Sand, soil and other debris will tend to be carried down and off the sides of the launching lanes and launching ramp.

V-Groove Detail

V-Groove Alignment

Herringbone V-Grooves

3. On wide, multiple lane launching ramps, it is advantageous to alternate the direction of the

V-grooves from lane to lane, thus forming a "herringbone" pattern. This provides a distinct permanent delineation of the launching lanes. Changes in the direction of the

Page - 27 - of 74

V-grooves should never be made except at launching lane lines.

B. V-groove tool design varies in size, shape, weight, and material used for fabrication. Steel, aluminum and wood tools have been used successfully. However, it appears that aluminum is perhaps the best choice in consideration of the tool's size, weight, and the ease and speed with which a finisher can produce crisp, straight V-grooves in wet concrete.

1. V-Groove Tool Design , for a tool to be used to finish large areas of cast-in-place concrete.

a. Weight: 22# to 25#

b. Length: 24" to 30"

c. Width: 20" to 24"

d. Material:1"x 1" x 3/16" aluminum angle

e. Fabrication: Cut, shape, weld and grind smooth one end (see commentary below) of

14 to 17 pieces of aluminum angle to resemble the bow of a boat. Assemble the pieces to form a tool 20" to

24" wide. Fit them snugly together, slightly staggering each piece so as to form a 60o angle on both the leading and following edges so that the tool will fit snugly against the forms on each side of the launching lane. Weld the angles to cross pieces of larger angle or channel to hold the tool together. Provide an appropriate means of attaching a handle. The handle assembly for a "Fresno" float works well. If a

"herringbone" finish is required on a multiple lane launching ramp, a second "mirror image" tool must be made in order to form V-grooves in alternating directions.

f. Commentary: Contractors have suggested cutting the trailing edge of the tool square rather than bow shaped. They claim that the wet concrete breaks free of the trailing edge much sharper and cleaner than it does from the gradual release from a bow shape. Also, some contractors prefer to build lighter tools and add

Page - 28 - of 74 field weights as required to get the best results and production.

Construction Requirements

552.03 Composition (Concrete Mix Design).

Specifications for launching ramp concrete should include the following:

6 sack concrete 3/4”maximum aggregate

4,000 psi compressive strength 5% air entrainment

Type II cement 3” to 4” slump

These specifications have been developed over a period of 20 years and are based on actual construction experience on dozens of launching ramp projects. They provide a concrete mix that is easy to work, will readily take and hold a V-groove finish, and will result in a strong, durable, functional launching ramp with a long service life. Therefore, any deviation from these specifications should be done carefully and thoughtfully.

(c) Method C. Make the concrete using a dry, preproportioned, blended, and bagged mix meeting the requirements of ASTM C 387 and mixed at the jobsite according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

(d) Fly Ash- or Pozzolan-Modified Concrete. Fly ash may be substituted for cement at the rate of 20 ounces of fly ash per 16 ounces of Portland cement. After substitution, reduce the design aggregate volumes by an amount equal to the net increase in volume of the combined cement and fly ash. Replace no less than 10 percent and no more than 20 percent of the weight of Portland cement required with fly ash at the above rate. For purposes of controlling the maximum water/cement ratio of 0.49, make the water/cement ratio for fly-ash-modified concrete the ratio of the weight of water to the combined weights of Portland cement and 60 percent of the weight of the fly ash.

Extend the standard 28-day curing period for compressive-strength tests for fly-ash modified concrete by 1 day (rounded to the nearest whole day) for each 1.5 percent of Portland cement replaced with fly ash at the selected rate. (Example: If the maximum of 20 percent cement is replaced, the curing period for cylinders is 41 days.)

Page - 33 - of 74

General. Perform excavation and backfill work according to Section 209. When concrete is cracked, spalling, or scaling, remove concrete to the nearest joint.

Design and construct forms that are free of bulge and warp and allow for removal without injuring the concrete. When concrete contains a retarding admixture, fly ash, or other pozzolan replacement for cement, design the forms for a lateral pressure equal to that exerted by a fluid with a mass of 2.5 ton per cubic yard.

Use wood, metal, or other suitable material for forms. Keep forms clean and coat with a form release agent or form oil before placing concrete.

Place and fasten reinforcing steel according to Subsection 554.08.

Placing Concrete. Place all reinforcing steel in position and ensure that it is securely held in place by approved supports during placing of concrete. Do not place concrete until the grading, forms, and steel reinforcements have been inspected and approved by the CO. Provide 24 hours written notice prior to placement of any concrete.

Place reinforcing steel according to Section 554.

Discharge all concrete prepared using methods A and B into the forms within the time limits shown in table 601-1. These time limits are based on jobsite ambient air temperature, cement type, and admixture used. Begin counting time from when the cement is introduced into the aggregate. Discharge concrete prepared using method C into the forms within 1-1/2 hours after introducing water to the mixture. Do not retemper concrete. When required cement must be added to the mixer at the jobsite. Do not mix or place concrete when the temperature is, or is expected to be, less than 40 °F unless adequate provisions are made to protect the concrete.

Place concrete to avoid segregation. Use high-frequency internal vibrators for consolidating concrete in the forms. Operate vibrators to produce concrete free of voids, but do not hold them in one place long enough to result in segregation or formation of laitance on the surface.

Method C concrete may be rodded instead of internally vibrated as necessary to remove voids.

Do not use aluminum pipe, conduit, or troughs for transporting concrete. When concrete is pumped, take samples from the discharge stream at the point of placement. Do not apply water to plastic concrete surfaces during finishing operations.

628 – Cofferdams and Dewatering Description

This work consists of designing, constructing, maintaining, dewatering, removing and disposing of cofferdams, which are necessary for construction of the structure. A four foot maximum depth will be required.

General. At locations where proposed construction work is at a lower elevation than the elevation of the lake or ground water at the time of performing the work, suitable cofferdams (protection dikes or other such measures) and a dewatering system, shall be constructed by the

Contractor. The locations of the cofferdams and the dewatering system shall be selected by the Contractor and presented in a plan submitted to the Government for review. The construction area shall be dewatered prior to commencement of the work and the water level shall be kept below all proposed construction work during construction operations. The cofferdams shall be constructed of materials that will provide a safe and reasonably dry work area.

The Contractor shall submit a Cofferdam and Dewatering Plan to the Government at least 30 days prior to the start of dewatering for the

Governments review. Review by the Government does not constitute any liability by the Government. The cofferdam and dewatering plan shall present, at a minimum, the following information:

1. The locations of cofferdams and details concerning the cofferdams’ materials and method of installation.

2. Locations and details regarding the dewatering system including, but not limited to, pumps, sumps, well points, dewatering wells, ditches, piping, electrical sources, and discharge points.

3. The Contractor’s dewatering system shall approximately uniformly draw down the groundwater level across the site. As such, well points or dewatering wells shall be spaced at no more than 35-foot center-center spacing (less as required to develop an approximate uniform drawdown).

4. Dewatering calculations, well screen sizes, and filter pack gradation sizes. Well screens and filter pack material shall be properly sized so as to prevent piping or removal of embankment materials during dewatering operations. Gradation results from soil borings performed at the site are attached to this specification section for Contractor reference.

5. Testing means for discharge water to ensure that piping or removal of embankment materials during dewatering operations is not occurring.

6. Backup power generating devices (e.g. diesel generators) as required to operate dewatering pumps in the event that electrical service becomes unavailable (e.g. during power outages).

7. Equipment and procedures necessary to promptly notify the Contractor if electrical service becomes unavailable. Notification shall be required regardless of the time of day.

8. Means, methods, and procedures necessary to switch over to the backup power generating devices in a timely manner as required to prevent damage to the embankment in the event that the dewatering system should fail to operate.

9. Erosion and Sediment Control structures to prevent any erosion on any adjacent areas.

Responsibility for Damage or Destruction as Result of Flooding.

The Contractor shall be responsible for any and all damage that may occur at the site as a result of floods, and shall replace or restore damaged structures or features of work, either of a permanent or temporary character, at no additional cost to the Government. The

Contractor shall have no basis of claims because floods occurring during the construction period were unprecedented in magnitude or frequency.

The design, construction, and performance of the cofferdams are the sole responsibility of the Contractor. By designing the cofferdams and submitting the Dewatering Plans for the project, the Contractor has indicated that he has observed the sites, has reviewed the subsurface conditions, and has accounted for those conditions in the design and performance of the cofferdams and the dewatering systems. Any and all damages associated with the installation, performance, or removal of the cofferdams and dewatering systems are the responsibility of the

Contractor and shall be repaired by the Contractor at no cost to the Government.

During dewatering operations the Contractor shall maintain, on-site, backup power generating devices (e.g. diesel generators) as required to operate dewatering pumps in the event that electrical service becomes unavailable (e.g. during power outages). The Contractor shall also have in-place the means, methods, and procedures necessary to switch over to the backup power generating devices in a timely manner as required to prevent damage to the embankment in the event that the dewatering system should fail to operate.

Upon completion of dewatering operations, all dewatering equipment shall be removed from the site.

Measurement

628.03 Measure the Section 628 items listed in the bid schedule according to Subsection 109.02 and the following as applicable.

Payment

628.04 The accepted quantities will be paid at the contract price per unit of measurement for the Section 628 pay items listed in the bid schedule. Payment will be full compensation for the work prescribed in this section. See subsection 109.05.
