In case the bed trimmed on the bottom of the trench is too low, earth shall be placed in the bottom of the trench and tamped, and a new bed shall be trimmed for the pipe. Pipe shall not be raised by ramming earth beneath it.

2. All water lines shall be provided with a minimum of thirty (30) inches of cover.

Lubricants, primers, adhesives, etc., shall be used as recommended by the pipe and/or joint manufacturer's specifications. The joints shall be made and a watertight joint obtained.

4. When the pipe has been bedded and the joint made, the recess under the couplings shall be refilled with earth and enough refilled and tamped on each side of the pipe to hold it securely in place. Care shall be taken to not disturb the position of the pipe during this process.

5. Backfill shall not be placed over any pipe that is in a heated condition. Before backfilling, the pipe temperature shall be brought to the approximate temperature of the ground either by running water through it or by backfilling in the early morning when pipe and ground are at the same temperature.

6. A continuous and uniform bedding shall be provided in the trench for all buried pipe. Back-fill material shall be tamped in layers around the pipe and to a sufficient height above the pipe to adequately support and protect the pipe. Stones, other than crushed bedding, shall not come into contact with the pipe and shall not be within six (6) inches of the pipe.

7. Trenches shall be kept free and dry during bedding, laying, jointing, and backfilling.

8. At the end of each work day and when left unattended, all open ends of the pipes will be covered to prevent entrance of trash or wildlife.

D. Testing

1. Waterlines - Before backfilling any section over pipe couplings, it shall be tested by the Contractor in accordance with AWWA C600. Test pressure shall be a minimum of 90 PSI (1.5 times the working pressure) for two hours with no allowable leakage. An air pressure test will not be accepted. The Contractor shall record all test procedures and results and submit two (2) copies to the COR upon completion of all pressure testing.

2. Leaks or defects revealed by the tests will be located and repaired until no leaks are detected and the pressure holds for two hours. Any length of pipe or pipe fitting damaged or defective shall be promptly removed from the job site or destroyed.

2. Test System for Proper Operation in the Presence of the COR.

E. Disinfection of Waterlines – This section kept for reference- follow all SC DHEC requirements per permit.

Prior to disinfecting water lines, contractor shall post signs at each toilet building informing the public not to drink the water. All hydrants and drinking fountains shall be turned off at the underground valve during disinfecting operations.

1. Disinfection of waterlines shall be conducted in accordance with AWWA C651. Upon completion of the water system, the entire system shall be disinfected by pumping chlorine at 50 ppm throughout the entire system. Valves, faucets, fixtures, and hydrants shall be opened at this time permitting the solution to flow through until the strong smell of chlorine is detected and then closed. This chlorinated water shall remain in the system for a minimum of 24 hours. At the end of the 24 hour disinfection period, the treated water in all portions of the waterlines must have a residual of not less than 10 ppm free chlorine. Then the system must be flushed with potable water and the sampling program started. Care must be exercised to prevent damage to the equipment or surrounding environment when draining the system.

2. SC DHEC will conduct sampling per their direction. (This section left for reference) The number of sampling sites depends on the amount of new construction but must include all dead-end lines and be representative of the water in the newly constructed mains. At each site, a minimum of two (2) satisfactory bacteriological samples taken at least 24 hours apart shall be obtained. Also at each site, chlorine residual at time of sampling must be measured and reported. If the membrane filter method of coliform analysis is used, non-coliform growth must also be reported. If non-coliform growth is greater than 80 colonies per 100 milliliters, the sample result is invalid and must be repeated. All samples shall be analyzed by a State approved laboratory.

3. Location and number of bacteriological samples and chlorine residual tests required are as follows: (SC DHEC will conduct final sampling per their direction)

3. If the chlorine residual at each site is greater than 0.0 mg/l, then the bacti and chlorine residual tests shall be repeated at that site.
