The contractor will use the Hack and squirt “Direct injection” method to chemically kill undesired species to complete the midstory/weed tree removal in stand 44 in the Loess Hills WMA (see Attachment A). A hatchet and squirt bottle will be needed to allow chemical to reach the cambial layer of trees and shrubs, there needs to be an injection site “hack” every 2-3” around the circumference of the tree. Targeted species for hack and squirt include all mid-story trees (0.5”-12” DBH) that are not Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) and invasive shrubs.

This work will need to be completed between the time frame of July 15 – October 31, 2024 when temperatures are above 32 degrees. Chemicals to be used are water soluble versions of glyphosate or triclopyr-based chemicals such as (Element 3A or Garlon 3A) for injectable use. The appropriate chemical must be mixed and applied, as labeled, for tree injection. Read the chemical label to determine the appropriate amount injected into each cut (usually 1⁄2 or 1 ml). If any other chemicals are to be used, they must be okayed with Missouri River Wildlife Unit stuff prior to use.
