The contract is part of the ESS (Educational Support Services) program and focuses on a collaborative project to address the shortage of speech-language pathologists in Arizona schools.
The amendment extends the contract for one year through September 30, 2021, with a total budget of $249,909. Arizona Department of Education – 11-22-ED NAU Contract
Recruiting and Preparing Highly Qualified and Diverse Speech-Language Pathologists to Work in Arizona Schools
Project Year, Oct 1, 2020 – Sept 30, 2021
Basic Concept: This proposal presents initiatives in response to Arizona’s shortage of speech-language pathologists, the current national and Arizona need for highly qualified and diverse speech-language pathologists and the NAU Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders’ mission to recruit and provide high quality preparation for speech and language professionals to work in Arizona’s school settings.
Purpose: The activities to be undertaken highlight NAU’s signature Clinical Speech-language
Pathology Summers Track as a unique infrastructure for preparing speech and language service providers to work in Arizona school settings. In addition to emphasizing knowledge of culturally-relevant evidenced-based practices, this project focuses on preparing speech-language pathologists to address the learning needs of children from culturally and linguistically diverse and low-income backgrounds.
Initiatives: In this partnership between the Arizona Department of Education and Northern
Arizona University, a new class of 30 Summers Track NAU graduate students will receive the full scope of opportunities through coursework and clinical experiences to (1) acquire the knowledge and skill competencies necessary for the Master of Science degree in Clinical
Speech-Language Pathology, and (2) acquire practical cross-cultural competencies proven to be effective in settings serving bilingual, culturally and socioeconomically diverse children, and
(3) acquire competencies in the delivery of bilingual speech and language services.
The five (A-E) specific aims related to this project are:
A. To recruit and accept 30 Speech-Language Pathology Assistants and Speech-Language
Technicians into the NAU Summers Track graduate program. Innovative recruitment efforts will be used to draw working speech-language pathology assistants and speech-language technicians into the master’s degree program at Northern Arizona University.
The accepted students will engage in coursework and practicum experiences to upgrade to a master’s degree in clinical speech-language pathology and acquire a state license and national certification to practice. They will graduate as highly-qualified speech-language pathologists prepared to provide culturally appropriate services to children with disabilities in Arizona’s schools.
B. To advise and monitor the Summers Track students as they matriculate through the curriculum and provide support to the field clinical educators who provide on-site training toward the acquisition of clinical knowledge and skills to their graduate clinician supervisees.
C. To provide Tuition and Additional Living Expense support for all eligible NAU Summers
Track students who are working in Arizona schools. All qualified Arizona applicants to the Summers Track are accepted into the graduate program. With the upcoming 2021 entering cohort and shifting eligibility among current students, we project that 45 students will be eligible for Tuition and Additional Living Expense funding support. To receive this funding, students must be in good academic standing and must complete an application that includes a personal statement of commitment to working with children in Arizona schools. Each year Northern Arizona University sets a target to accept 30 qualified students in the Summers Track of the master’s degree program, giving priority to Arizona resident students. A new Year 1 (2021) cohort of 30 students added to the Year 2 (2020) cohort, Year 3 (2019) cohort and Year 4 (2018) cohort comprise a combined total of approximately 124 students; 45 are projected to be
Arizona residents. These 45 Arizona resident students will receive evidence-based course content, enhanced clinical education and high-quality supervised clinical practicum.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES NOT CHARGED TO 11-22-ED
D. [Not charged] To provide a 10-week Praxis Review to graduate students as preparation for the speech-language pathology praxis exam. This Review is designed to support the
Praxis pass rates of NAU graduate students and will be accessible in an online format to
Summers Track students as part of their Practicum course following their third summer of in-person coursework on the NAU Mountain Campus.
E. [Not Charged] To provide faculty recruitment and mentoring support for the underrepresented students accepted to the graduate program. This faculty member will engage in extensive recruitment efforts and assist underrepresented students who enter the program to address the educational barriers that some native students face in graduate school.
This partnership between the Arizona Department of Education and Northern Arizona
University builds and maintains a workforce of high-quality and culturally-competent speech and language services to Arizona’s children with disabilities.
