PAST PERFORMANCE

FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA)

The UAS integration Office (AUS) is responsible for leading FAA’s efforts to safely integrate UAS into the National Airspace System

(NAS). The NAS Modernization Group (AJW-124), along with Censys Technologies, conducted a series of Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight

(BVLOS) operations over a two-day period totaling 82 miles. The four flights, covering varying distances and payloads with the Sentaero

BVLOS platform, simulated emergency reconnaissance operations for post-natural disaster assessment. As roads are often inaccessible post-storm, these assessments helped determine feasibility and helped drive stronger natural disaster deployment strategy with UAS. Utilization of UAS in post-natural disaster assessments can be an effective tool for evaluating critical assets and overall damage assessment as they are rapidly deployable and carry lower risks than manned air assets.

NEW JERSEY (NJ) TRANSIT

NJ Transit provides safe, reliable, and affordable public transportation for the state of NJ, covering a service area of 5,325 square miles, 12 rail lines, and serves 270 million passenger trips across all modalities each year. The public transportation corporation is the third largest in the country with extensions into New York City and Philadelphia. The Sentaero platform and CensWise (AI/ML) solution allows NJ Transit to autonomously perform right-of-way and infrastructure inspections quickly, accurately, and in real time. NJ Transit uses the Sentaero to conduct infrastructure inspections, emergency management, public affairs support, and construction management operations. RailCens, a dynamic module of CensWise, reduces the safety risk and time needed to identify and fix these problems. As RailCens is sensor agnostic and can pull data from multiple streams (i.e., images and unstructured data), NJ Transit is able to conduct efficient and continuous inspections of infrastructure, assets, foreign objects, vegetation encroachment/management, and encroachment of persons, animals, and vehicles.

CENSWISE AI/ML

COMPUTER VISION PLATFORM

PLATFORM OVERVIEW

CensWise™ AI platform is a streamlined, simple-to-use AI modeling platform which enables subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop, deploy and execute robust and accurate AI models with limited data sets, from a multitude of sensor types, in just a few days. CensWise™ manages the full lifecycle of an AI application from cradle to grave. It can be used to consume images as well as unstructured data and produce automated

AI models which generate valuable intelligence outputs on their own. This platform has been tested in various verticals including utility / telecom, rail / transit, forestry / agriculture, oil / gas, industrial automation, and security / safety.

CensWise™ can generate models from small data sets and grow algorithms’ performance (accuracy) on its own from live incoming data.

Algorithms generated by this platform can be chained to build a wide breadth of applications that run inference equally well in computation power abundant environments like the cloud as well as in specialized edge/on-prem applications that may have severe bandwidth and power limitations.

The platform can process various data streams including raw and compressed images and raw numerical sensory data in cloud-like environments and directly at the edge.

The platform consists of the following components:

Streams

Algorithms

Applications

Labeling Suite

Training Engine

Output Actions

Edge Computing Inference Engine

HOW IT WORKS

Streams

Streams are data buckets which are continuously filled with incoming data that is fed into the training or inference engine. A stream can receive data through manual upload or automatically via machine-to-machine API communication. Stream pipelines are highly optimized to process thousands of images or data points per second.

Algorithms

Algorithms (or models) are the AI brains of the platform. Based on data coming into the streams CensWise trains and builds algorithms which learn to perform a particular task on their own. Algorithms are autodidactically trained and improved until they reach a level of maturity

(confidence) where no further training is needed or desired, and they go into a self-sufficient state. This can take from a few days to weeks depending on the quality and quantity of data.

Applications

Applications (or use-cases or Apps) are virtual assemblies of streams, algorithms, and output actions. Each application processes one or more input(s) by putting data through one or more algorithm(s) to generate a detection in the form of an intelligent inference. Each application provides confidence levels of each output inference. The user can then define a cutoff confidence level to fine-tune the final desired output.

Labeling Suite

Before algorithms are trained, we use SMEs or SME-instructed specialists that help label stream data to produce trainable data sets which are fed into an algorithm training engine. CensWise includes a data labeling suite which enables the annotation of data in several ways – boxing, polygons, segmentation, etc. to produce application specific sets. This labeling suite can be installed in the cloud or on premises (edge) depending on the customer’s desire.

Training Engine

CensWise’s training engine continuously monitors existing streams and labeled data and generates new models as new labels become available. Models are continuously benchmarked against professionally designed validation sets and marked for release when performance criteria are met. The training engine is designed to be completely handsfree and requires little to no user input.

HOW IT WORKS

Output Actions

Before algorithms are trained, we use SMEs or SME-instructed specialists that help label stream data to produce trainable data sets which are fed into an algorithm training engine. CensWise includes a data labeling suite which enables the annotation of data in several ways – boxing, polygons, segmentation, etc. to produce application specific sets. This labeling suite can be installed in the cloud or on premises (edge) depending on the customer’s desire.

Edge Computing Inference Engine

Not all applications can be run in the cloud due to various operational limitations; as an example, some applications are run at the edge, because they might be in remote/dark territories with limited power and bandwidth. CensWise’s models are optimized to run directly at the edge on low powered devices. Deploying

CensWise’s models in these stringent conditions is extremely easy and allows for the ability to receive critical objective or defect information processed in real-time.

INVASIVE GRASS DETECTION EXAMPLE

DEVELOPMENT and VALIDATION METHODOLOGY

1. Identify Applications:

a. Application Name

b. Identification of asset(s) and classification

c. Specific characteristics identifying defect or condition.

d. Example image of defect or anomaly

2. Initial classification type based on complexity (A node is a single sensor payload type and collection platform, with performance-based requirements for data collection):

a. Basic – The target/subject is easy to observe with existing sensors and has a high volume of sample images to feed into the system for training. It also consists of a single model. 10TB of data processing and storage provided per month.

i. Examples: Specific target/subject identification and inventory, ROW vegetation encroachment, invasive species identification.

b. Intermediate – Existing sensors provide adequate capture and resolution to detect but there are limited production examples of the proposed defect or anomaly. This normally requires two or more models to build a complete application. 10TB of data processing and storage provided per month.

i. Examples: Multiple specific target/subject defect inspection (up to 4),

c. Complex – This is the most challenging as the target/subject is difficult to capture and may require a specialized sensor type.

There are also extremely limited examples of the desired defect or anomaly. It will also take two or more models to perform accurately and a longer development duration. 10TB of data processing and storage provided per month.

i. Examples: Specific target/subject

3. Based upon complexity, the estimated timeline for development and deployment into production is defined.

4. Begin model development and defining the boxing/labeling strategy for images.

5. Once the model is constructed, begin the labeling process to train.

6. Upon achieving a F1 score in the >90% range, model moved into production.

7. Censys provides customer with the “Model Validation Checklist” form.

8. Application performance is monitored and evaluated daily until it reaches acceptable levels.

9. If for any reason, the model fails to perform in production, the initial approach is re-evaluated, and the process restarts from the beginning.

10. Reporting and meetings are conducted on a weekly basis via teleconference and in person when necessary.

UTILICENS AI/ML

A DYNAMIC MODULE OF CENSWISE

MODULE OVERVIEW and APPLICATIONS

UtiliCens is a dynamic module of our CensWise™ AI / ML software platform and is designed for deployment in both the transmission and distribution environment. The specific applications are capable of ingesting image and sensor data from Sentaero UAS payloads, as well as a multitude of other system sensors, including terrestrial vehicle payloads.

This sensor array will be connected to a Censys provided edge computing inference engine and 4G / 5G streaming enabled to provide real-time alerts and communicate with a cloud-based server. This automated system would allow for an efficient and continuous inspections of right of way (ROW) infrastructure without requiring additional manpower or time. Some example applications are:

1. ROWCens – This application is designed to identify and evaluate critical customer assets located on or near the transmission right of way, such as, signage, fencing / gates, lightning, and other infrastructure as directed by the customer. The algorithm can create a digital inventory and allow for a comparative analysis of the assets with each subsequent pass.

2. VegCens – An AI driven geospatial analytics tool for vegetation management (VM). It uses photogrammetry and LiDAR data to identify and measure vegetation encroachment and vitality within user defined regions and generate alerts and reports.

3. TowerCens – With a location-based mapping and identification engine and the ability to evaluate the condition of transmission towers and associated infrastructure, this application can be used over time to develop predictive models for more efficient maintenance.

4. PoleCens – Similar to TowerCens, this application and its tools are designed for the wildly dynamic environment of power distribution.

5. SafeCens – By nature of the name, this application is deployed to evaluate the area adjacent to the right of way for safety and security. It can detect and categorize types of encroachments like a person, animal, vehicle, etc. and provide alerts in real-time.

6. CommonCens - is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) driven interoperability module that can be used to combine multiple sources of georeferenced sensor data into a “Common Operating Picture” for both automated assessment and manual evaluation.
