I. BACKGROUND
Malaria continues to be a major public health problem in Zambia, exacting its largest toll on children and pregnant women. It accounts for nearly 4.3 million clinical cases and an estimated 50,000 deaths per year and up to 20% of maternal mortality. Incidence rates have tripled over the past 30 years due to resistance to chloroquine, reduced mosquito control and decreased access to health care.
Zambia has made important progress is combating this disease over the past few years by changing to a more effective first-line treatment Artemisinin based Combination Therapy (ACT), revitalizing the indoor residual spraying (IRS) program, making preventive treatment available to pregnant women, and scaling up access to long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs).
USAID and USAID-funded partners assisted in drafting the National Malaria Strategic Plan and implementing key interventions to support this Plan including procuring and distributing Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets targeted at pregnant women and children under five, strengthening diagnosis and treatment of malaria, reducing the risk of malaria during pregnancy through intermittent preventive therapy (IPT), and assisting the Ministry of Health (MOH) with its IRS strategy through insecticide procurement including protective equipment, training, and technical assistance.
The US Government, through USAID, is one of the largest donors in malaria in Zambia and has provided over $31 million in this area since 1999. Zambia was selected as a focus country under President Bush’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) in December 2006. From FY 2008, USAID/Zambia will have significantly more resources to scale up key malaria treatment, prevention, and control interventions.
USAID/ Zambia Organizational Structure
USAID/Zambia is one of the largest Mission programs in Africa and operates in close cooperation with the State Department and the Zambian Government (GRZ). The program budget for FY 2007 is over $152 million and covers a wide array of activities.
