About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a Calibrated Screw Burris Gravity Meter. The SOW outlines the scope of work to explore the applicability of high precision gravimetry to problems relating to national security. The work will involve using an industry leading gravimeter from Burris to make measurements relating to mapping underground cavities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and in an active limestone mine, as well as testing the capability of the gravimeter to sense hidden anomalous masses within containers. The results will inform future development of novel integrated sensors for scenarios related to the Air Force mission and support current and future theses for AFIT students.
The related federal contract opportunity is a Sole Source Synopsis for the purchase, installation, service, warranty, training, and commissioning of zero-length spring gravimeters to be implemented at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). The Government intends to solicit and negotiate with only one source, ZLS Corporation, under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1) as AFIT has developed software for interfacing with the Burris ZLS Corp gravimeter data formats and ZLS is the only US-based company which sells a zero-length spring-based gravimeter.

Statement of Work For Calibrated Screw Burris Gravity Meter Title: Calibrated Screw Burris Gravity Meter Document Date: 31 Jan 24
1. Scope:
The applicability of high precision gravimetry to problems relating to national security will be explored. An industry leading gravimeter from Burris will be used to make measurements relating to mapping underground cavities at both Oak Ridge National Laboratory as well as in an active limestone mine. In addition, lead and tungsten bricks will be arranged to test the capability of this gravimeter to sense hidden anomalous masses within containers. The results of these measurements will inform future development of novel integrated sensors for scenarios related to the Air Force mission. This work will support current and future these for AFIT students.
1.1 Background:
Zero-length spring gravimeters (also known as Lacoste and Romberg gravimeters) are capable of sensitive gravity measurements that can indicate anomalously high or low densities and are typically used for oil and gas exploration. This gravity sensor can complement existing radiation detection approaches, since the more an adversary attempts to shield the radiation the more visible the anomalous density of the shielding will be to the gravity meter. In addition, gravity meters can sense underground caverns and tunnels.
2. Applicable Documents N/A
3. Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
The Calibrated Screw Burris Gravity Meter is a metal zero-length spring gravimeter with a hardened metal micrometer screw. This meter can function across the world and in a temperature range of -15 to 50 C. It also has control electronics to enable easy and precise measurements.
The following specification lists the minimum (threshold) requirements for the gravity meter:
| 1. | Relative zero-length spring (i.e. Lacoste & Romberg style) gravimeter with reading resolution of 0.1 microGal and standard deviation of <5 microGal |
| 2. | Mature uncompensated drift of <20 microGal/Day |
| 3. | Less than 200 arcseconds range of automatic tilt compensation |
| 4. | Typical tares <5 microGal for shocks up to 20G |
| 5. | Automated corrections for Earth tide, instrument tilt, and temperature |
| 6. | GPS accuracy of 2.5 m |
| 7. | Rechargable battery with 16 hours standby and 14 hours operating time |
| 8. | Data output: USB or Bluetooth |
| 9. | Calibrated screw meter at 50 mGal intervals across range of the screw |
| 10. | Calibration precision of +/- 0.015 mGal |
4. Delivery/Period of Performance:
ZLS will deliver the Gravity Meter no later than 90 Days ARO (After Receipt of Order)
4.1 Place of Performance:
Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT/EN) ATTN: Greg Smith 2950 Hobson Way Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7765
