About this file
This document outlines technical specifications for laser Doppler vibrometry systems required by the Bureau of Reclamation. The agency requires two Polytec VibroFlex Qtec laser Doppler vibrometer systems configured with VFX-F-110 front-end hardware and VFX-I-160 sensor heads. The systems must have a minimum operating range of 300 meters, be capable of measuring vibrational data from DC to 25 kHz, and have a velocity sensitivity range of 12 meters/second. Additional required components include tripod-mounted sensors with manual aiming adjustments, a tripod-mountable positioning unit with micrometer controls, and a separate four-channel data acquisition unit to interface sensors with an external data logger or laptop. The systems will be used to remotely monitor hydropower generator components and collect vibrational data on large concrete structures to enable seismic velocity imaging.
This procurement opportunity is associated with solicitation number 140R8123Q0253 from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation for laser Doppler vibrometers.

Engineering Geology and Geophysics (85-832000) VibroFlex Qtec Laser Doppler Vibrometers
Brand/Model Specs
The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) has a requirement to procure two (2) Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) sensing systems, required peripherals, and data acquisition and post-processing software that could be extremely useful for rapid and comprehensive concrete structure condition assessments, damage/deterioration and void detection and mapping across large and vertical concrete structures. One particular system (Polytec Vibroflex Qtec system configured with VFX-F-110 Front-End hardware and the VFX-I-160 sensor head) is capable of long-range (300m+) offsets from the target surface with market-leading sensitivity and data quality at these far offsets, making this a practical solution for vibrational (seismic) data collection on large distant structures without the need for physical access by field crew or sensor contact to the target surface.
This ability to remotely collect broad-band (DC to 50 kilohertz) vibrational data has several implications for improving and extending current instrumentation practices and can overcome several challenges faced with sensor placements. For example, LDV can be used to remotely monitor hydropower generator components that are in line-of-sight but perhaps have a variety of conditional challenges to physical access and sensor installation (e.g., small physical access spaces, high surface temperatures, or strong electrical/magnetic fields that pose threat of flash arcs or damage to contact sensors).
Furthermore, in many situations, vibrational data can be collected during normal operating conditions.
Lastly, two of these systems are required in order to use them in a time-synchronized fashion to collect two-point measurements simultaneously which will enable 1-D/2-D/3-D/4-D seismic velocity imaging via surface wave analysis (active and passive seismic interferometry).
Long-Range High-sensitivity and dynamic range LDV system:
BRAND/MODEL:
Polytec Inc., VibroFlex Qtec VFX-I-160 Laser Doppler Vibrometers
MECHANICAL:
• Tripod-mounted LDV sensors
• Manually aimed via tripod course/fine adjustments
• A tripod-mountable pan/tilt positioner must be provided with fine adjustment via x,y micrometers
• IP40 rated (dust and condensation protection)
• Operating temperature: +5 °C … +40 °C (41 °F ... 104 °F)
• Operating max relative humidity: 80%, non-condensing
• Separate 4-channel data acquisition unit (VibroLink Digital Data Interface) that interfaces the
LDV sensors to an external data logger/laptop (separate electronics for sensor and front end).
This design makes the sensor more compact, lightweight, and free of electronic crosstalk.
Additionally, it allows for a truly non-contact approach to changing the settings.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHARACTERISTICS:
• Patented multiple-detector technology (QTec) provides stabilized digital demodulation and zero dropouts. This results in faster measurement times and the cleanest possible data that is essential for further analysis.
• Single-point sensors with heterodyne multi-path interferometer utilizing reception diversity.
• Upgradeability: System can be seamlessly upgraded to increase its frequency and velocity limits.
• Features a live video channel fully integrated into the optical head using the same front lens as the measurement laser (coaxial) with a central reticle precisely aligned with the measurement laser. This video image is used for focusing the measurement laser onto the target and the reticle is used for aligning it precisely onto the area of interest on the structure being measured.
• Operating range: must exceed 300m.
• Dynamic frequency range: DC to 25KHz
• Upgradeability: System can be seamlessly upgraded to increase its frequency and velocity limits.
• Velocity Sensitivity Range: 12 m/s particle velocity upper limit
• Measurement laser: invisible (IR), wavelength 1550 nm, output power <10 mW and targeting laser: visible (green), wavelength 520 ± 10 nm, effect. output power < 1 mW. Class 2 laser with both lasers in operation
• Each LDV sensor has a seismic accelerometer reference sensor
• Laser Beam focusing: Selectable auto focus , remote focus, and manual focus modes
• BNC input ports for use with external trigger inputs for establishing a time-zero fiducial for active seismic surveys
• Two selectable high pass and two low pass output filters must be included.
• Digital data acquisition and remote-control options. This feature makes it easy to either use pure digital data stream (via VibroLink) or access the settings via a web browser.
• 4 Channel data acquisition system for simultaneous time synced data acquisition using two LDV sensors and seismic accelerometer reference sensors simultaneously
POWER SUPPLY:
• System powered by 120v/240v AV, or 12v DC external power supplies
SYSTEM CALIBRATION:
• System and sensors come fully calibrated by manufacturer
• Warranty can be extended if calibration is maintained
SYSTEM DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING SOFTWARE:
• The software package is NOT optional, and is needed for both data collection and post-processing
• Data processing is performed using VibroSoft Pro which comes with VibroSoft VL VIB-W-001 Data management system (DMS) with integrated BNC connectors or Data Logger with:
o operating system Microsoft Windows 10 1607 64-bit or higher o 1 free PCIe x4 Generation 1 slots for the data acquisition board o For option VIB-S-SIG: 2 additional free PCIe x4 Generation 1 slots o 1 free USB 2.0 A slot for software protection dongle o 1 free USB 3.0 A slot for optional live video input (e. g. for VibroFlex Compact or
