About this award
This $500,000 National Endowment for the Humanities project grant funds the creation of a new digital imaging studio and staff positions at the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The studio and staff will expand the Library's digitized collections of African American, African, and African Diasporic materials. Specifically, the grant supports the establishment of a satellite digital imaging unit and the hiring of two full-time positions to increase the Center's capacity to photograph and digitize its African American collections. This aligns with the goals of the NEH's Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program to ensure long-term intellectual access to humanities resources held in libraries, museums and archives. The digitized collections will benefit researchers of African, African Diasporic, and African American culture as well as the general public interested in learning about the history of Black lives in the United States. No subawards are associated with this $500k project grant awarded January 1, 2022 for completion by December 31, 2022.
