About this award
The Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) received a $200,000 Project Grant award from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop an interpretive and audience development plan for the Old Idaho Penitentiary historic site. Funded under the Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program (CFDA 45.149), which supports projects that promote preserving and providing access to humanities resources, the award will cover partial salaries for seven ISHS staff positions and stipends for ten advisory board members and two consultants. Over the 12-month period from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2023, these individuals will implement an audience-centric design approach to conceptualize, plan and design new interpretive experiences at the Old Idaho Penitentiary based on best practices in the field. The improved exhibits and programming are intended to advance understanding of Idaho's social justice history through the stories of those housed at the former prison.
