The University of Chicago received a $120,000 Project Grant award from the Department of the Army Materiel Command Research Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) under the Department of Defense Basic Scientific Research program (CFDA 12.431). The grant supports research with the following key objectives:
-
Synthesize and fabricate low-melting inorganic molten salts consisting of multivalent anions, and elucidate the impact of anion bulk, charge, cation type, and eutectic composition on physicochemical properties, ion transport, and electrochemical stability.
-
Understand the influence of multivalent anion and counter-cation on reversible anion and cation (de)intercalation within graphite using ex-situ and in-situ characterization techniques.
-
Probe interfacial degradation processes occurring at both cathodic and anodic interfaces and chronicle changes to the bulk electrolyte (and electrode) properties to enable full cell carbon/carbon dual-ion batteries with long cycle life.
The award period is from February 1, 2025 to January 31, 2028.
