PRIMARY CARE TRAINING AND ENHANCEMENT: PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT RURAL TRAINING IN MENTAL AND BEHAV. HLTH - THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT PROGRAM (UPAP) SEEKS FUNDING TO ENHANCE PRIMARY CARE AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COMPETENCIES AMONG PA STUDENTS, WITH A DEDICATED FOCUS ON SERVING RURAL AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. THIS INITIATIVE IS ROOTED IN A NEED TO BOLSTER HEALTHCARE PROVISION IN AREAS FACING CRITICAL SHORTAGES OF PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS, PARTICULARLY GIVEN UTAH'S RANK OF 49TH IN THE NATION FOR ACTIVE PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN-TO-PATIENT RATIOS. THE AIM IS TO ADDRESS THIS GAP BY PREPARING PAS THROUGH A CURRICULUM ENRICHED WITH RURAL HEALTHCARE DELIVERY STRATEGIES, INTEGRATED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TRAINING, AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD) MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING MEDICATIONS FOR OPIOID USE DISORDER (MOUD). OUR PROPOSED PROJECT WILL INSTITUTE A MINIMUM OF A 3-MONTH INTEGRATED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CLINICAL ROTATION IN RURAL PRIMARY CARE SETTINGS, FOSTERING A HANDS-ON LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WHERE TRAINEES CAN ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTEGRATION. CONCURRENTLY, WE WILL REFINE OUR CURRICULUM TO INCORPORATE THE LATEST IN SUD INTERVENTIONS AND TELEHEALTH APPLICATIONS, ADDRESSING THE RECENT RISE IN OPIOID-RELATED MORTALITIES IN RURAL UTAH COUNTIES. THE TARGETED POPULATION INCLUDES PA STUDENTS WITH DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, EMPHASIZING RECRUITMENT FROM RURAL, UNDERSERVED, AND UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES. WE AIM TO ENSURE THAT OUR GRADUATES ARE NOT ONLY CLINICALLY PROFICIENT BUT ALSO CULTURALLY COMPETENT, EQUIPPED TO SERVE A VARIETY OF PATIENT POPULATIONS WITH SENSITIVITY AND AWARENESS OF THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES THEY FACE. OUR COMMITMENT TO THESE OBJECTIVES IS FURTHER DEMONSTRATED THROUGH STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND HEALTH CLINICS. THESE COLLABORATIONS ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE INTERPROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND CREATE A NETWORK OF SUPPORT FOR TRAINEES AND FACULTY, ENHANCING THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE DELIVERY. THE FUNDING PREFERENCE IS REQUESTED ON THE BASIS OF UPAP'S LONGSTANDI NG HISTORY AND PROVEN COMMITMENT TO ADDRESSING HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES, PARTICULARLY IN RURAL AREAS. OVER 60 PERCENT OF RECENT GRADUATES ARE ALREADY SERVING IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, AND OUR ROBUST NETWORK OF PARTNERSHIPS FURTHER SOLIDIFIES OUR CAPACITY TO MAKE A SUSTAINED IMPACT. THE SUPPORT REQUESTED WILL ENABLE UPAP TO EXPAND UPON THESE EFFORTS, INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WELL-TRAINED PAS READY TO MEET THE HEALTHCARE NEEDS OF RURAL POPULATIONS, THEREBY CONTRIBUTING TO THE NATIONAL GOAL OF IMPROVING ACCESS TO QUALITY PRIMARY CARE AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES. THIS PROJECT IS NOT MERELY AN EDUCATIONAL ENHANCEMENT; IT IS A STRATEGIC EFFORT TO STRENGTHEN THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE IN CRITICAL AREAS OF NEED. IT PROMISES NOT JUST IMMEDIATE BENEFITS TO OUR TRAINEES BUT A LONG-TERM, CASCADING IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTHCARE OUTCOMES FOR RURAL AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS.
