The University of Iowa received a $563,887 Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) under the Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398), effective July 9, 2026, through June 30, 2031. The grant supports a structured training program designed to develop surgeon-scientists capable of conducting independent basic, translational, and clinical research in surgical oncology. The program maintains three annual training slots for postgraduate MD or MD, PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) trainees who have completed at least two years of surgical residency, offering a two-year training curriculum available through either a basic science or clinical research track. Training is delivered through a collaborative governance structure featuring co-program directors from the Department of Surgery and a basic science department, supported by a six-member executive committee and five-member external advisory board composed of national leaders in surgical oncology training. Trainees receive individualized mentorship from 15 senior preceptors and 3 junior preceptors affiliated with the University of Iowa's NCI-designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and National Institutes of Health-supported research infrastructure. Research oversight is provided through track-specific committees that assign preceptors, establish trainee research committees including the preceptor and 2-3 additional faculty experts, and conduct periodic performance evaluations and progress reviews. This comprehensive training model prepares the next generation of surgical oncologists to deliver outstanding clinical services, conduct transformative research, and provide leadership in oncology across Iowa and nationally.University of Iowa Surgical Oncology Research Training Program
