About this award
This federal Project Grant award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (CFDA 45.161 - Promotion of the Humanities Research) in the amount of $300,000.00 will fund The Richard Rufus Project, which publishes critical editions of recently rediscovered works by the influential medieval philosopher Richard Rufus. Rufus played a decisive role in shaping the graduate and undergraduate curriculum for three centuries, introducing Aristotelianism into theology and influencing key medieval philosopher-theologians. This funding will support the publication of Rufus's Oxford Lectures, expected to be released in 2025. The project aims to contribute to philosophical debates and advance understanding of Rufus's important role in Western intellectual history.
Description
Rufus?s rediscovery is important because he played a decisive role in shaping the graduate and undergraduate curriculum for three centuries. He is the first master known to have lectured on aristotelian physics, psychology, and metaphysics at paris, the heart of the western intellectual world. He introduced aristotelianism into the only graduate humanities program at the time, theology, a discipline formerly dominated by patristic exegesis. Rufus influenced his contemporaries, the famed medieval philosopher-theologians albertus magnus, bonaventure, thomas aquinas, and john duns scotus. Even today rufus?s thought can contribute to philosophical debates about, for example, haecceity?the essence that makes something different from any other thing. The british academy first published our editions in 2003 and has now published five editions with lengthy annotations; IT hopes to publish his oxford lectures in 2025.]
