The University of Minnesota was awarded a $3,972,414 Project Grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke within the Department of Health and Human Services to develop an electro-optical multiphoton microscope. The microscope will leverage advances in electro-optical beam deflection to enable random-access multiphoton interrogation of neurons and synapses with sub-microsecond access times. This will allow neuroscientists to collect the simultaneous recordings needed to understand neural circuits controlling behavior and the disruption of these circuits in disease models. The award will support the design of entirely new electro-optical deflectors capable of deflecting larger laser beams at high speeds for incorporation into the microscope. The microscope is intended to provide critical information on the processes implementing computations in the brain under the National Institutes of Health's 21st Century Cures Act Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies program (CFDA 93.372). This program supports initiatives to revolutionize understanding of the human brain through accelerating innovative neurotechnology development and applications.
