Description
- Abstract
- This project, proposed by clinician scientist vinai gondi, M.D. Of the northwestern university (NU) robert h. Lurie comprehensive cancer center (rhlccc) and department of radiation oncology, aims to mentor and support rhlccc faculty as they deepen their participation in and leadership of NCI-sponsored clinical trials; translate laboratory science and early phase trials at rhlccc into NCI-sponsored trials in the brain tumor space; and, expand and diversify enrollment to NCI-sponsored trials from regional radiation oncology clinics across the northwestern medicine (NM) health system. To achieve these objectives, DR. Gondi plans to build upon his extensive experience with developing multiple NCI-sponsored clinical trials at both his institution and through the NCI-sponsored cooperative groups, mentoring investigators institutionally and nationally in NCI trial development, expanding NCI trial accrual and the clinical trial olice at his NM radiation oncology clinic, and chairing multiple NRG oncology committees including the investigator & career development committee and (starting march 2026) the brain tumor committee. As national principal investigator on six NCI-sponsored clinical trials, two of which have been practice-impacting, as well as CO-chair on another 10 NCI-sponsored trials, DR. Gondi has invested significant time and effort into concept and protocol development, trial conduct and leadership, statistical design and interpretation, critical decision-making, publication of clinical trial outcomes and clinical practice guidelines development based on practice-impacting nctn clinical trials that he has led across both the NCI division of cancer prevention (DCP) and the cancer therapy evaluation program (ctep) branches. With the support of this R50 funding, DR. Gondi plans to create a step-by-step plan to mentor NU radiation oncology faculty in their pursuit of NCI-sponsored trial research, translate promising laboratory research and early phase clinical trials conducted through the rhlccc NCI-funded brain spore grant and glioblastoma therapeutics network U19 grant into later-phase NCI-sponsored trials developed through the NRG oncology brain tumor committee, and collaborate with the medical directors of NM regional radiation oncology and the rhlccc clinical trial office to significantly expand accrual to NCI-sponsored trials at multiple regional NM radiation oncology clinics. DR. Gondi will commit a minimum of 20% of his effort (2.4 calendar months) to the objectives of this project, and the northwestern university department of radiation oncology and rhlccc is committed to supporting DR. Gondi's efforts. DR. Gondi has sustained a long-standing and successful track record of NCI-sponsored clinical trial research, and with the support of this R50 funding, he will leverage his extensive experience to expand NCI-sponsored trial development, accrual and leadership at rhlccc in a manner that aligns with the broader mission of NCI.
