Project Grant R44HL178153
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $1,103,783 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to the University of Illinois in Chicago. The long-term goal of this 7-year project, which runs from February 1, 2025 to January 31, 2032, is to advance the understanding of the molecular and neurobiological mechanisms underlying chronic pain in sickle cell disease (SCD) and develop effective pharmacologic treatments. The project will employ...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) provides $2,968,063.02 to conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 clinical trial of intravenous citrulline for treating vaso-occlusive crisis in sickle cell disease. The award recipient is the Children's Research Institute, a nonprofit pediatric research organization in Washington, D.C. The key products and services to be delivered include evaluating...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), provides $122,840 to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Inc. to enhance the mentoring skills of a mid-career physician-scientist, Dr. Amanda Brandow, and develop the next generation of clinical investigators focused on acute and chronic sickle cell disease (SCD) pain research. The overall goal is to improve understanding of the...
- This federal Project Grant award of $1,764,145.00 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), aims to develop effective pharmacological interventions to alleviate chronic pain in sickle cell disease (SCD). The award supports research to investigate the functional role of microRNA (miRNA), specifically the let-7 family, in regulating chronic pain pathways in SCD. The project will utilize mouse models...
- This $1,049,682 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), supports a prospective cohort study of 1,250 individuals (aged 15 and above) living with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the U.S. The goal is to develop and validate novel computational and clinical tools for understanding and addressing differences in pain experience and response to pain treatment among this population. Over a 3-year...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $755,853 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to the University of Illinois to evaluate the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) for treating chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with sickle cell disease (SCD). The 5-year project, running from September 2025 to June 2030, aims to determine if the SGLT2i drug empagliflozin can...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), provides $300,000 to Gigamune, Inc. to develop an in vivo gene therapy for sickle cell disease. The project aims to test a novel lentiviral vector technology for efficiently editing hematopoietic stem cells to knockout the BCL11A enhancer, a key genetic target for sickle cell treatment. Through in vitro assays, the Phase I effort will...
- The federal Project Grant award of $154,796 provided by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) aims to use non-invasive quantitative neuroimaging methods to study cerebral oxygen utilization in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). The goal is to improve understanding of neurological injury in anemia and develop biomarkers that can be used to triage patients for therapies and evaluate the impact of emerging curative and disease-modifying...
- This federal Project Grant award for $719,128 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research (CFDA 93.837) program, supports research to develop a mathematical model for oxygen-dependent equilibrium solubility of sickle hemoglobin in single red blood cells. The research aims to address the urgent unmet need for mechanistic models of sickle hemoglobin polymerization that can guide experimental drug development and personalized treatment...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) provides $765,931 to The Ohio State University to conduct a multi-center hybrid type I effectiveness-implementation trial. The project aims to assess the delivery of patient-facing, evidence-based guidelines for sickle cell disease (SCD) through a mobile health (mHealth) application and patient education booklets. The goal is to improve guideline...
This federal Project Grant award of $1,045,688.00 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) will support the development of a novel drug candidate called KYC for treating vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) and pain in people with sickle cell disease (SCD). The work will focus on demonstrating that KYC, a first-in-class "systems chemico-pharmacology drug," can inhibit vasculopathy, reduce vascular congestion, and alleviate pain in SCD. The research aims to obtain data showing KYC's ability to reduce VOC, pain, and irreversible sickling in SCD patients, both at baseline and after hypoxia/reoxygenation injury. Pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, safety, and pathology data will also be collected to demonstrate KYC as a safe and effective treatment for the vicious cycle of complications in SCD. The award period runs from September 2025 to June 2027.
