This Project Grant awarded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) will support research at the University of Illinois to advance the understanding of chronic pain mechanisms in sickle cell disease (SCD). The $1,103,783 award, effective February 1, 2025 through January 31, 2032, will employ transgenic mouse models to investigate epigenetic, neurobiological, and gut microbiota factors underlying chronic pain in SCD. The research aims to elucidate the molecular and neurobiological basis of chronic pain in SCD and identify potential therapeutic targets. The university's expertise in molecular biology, pharmacology, and translational research will enable them to move promising findings towards clinical development to benefit patients with this debilitating condition.
