Description

Abstract
The translation of federally funded life science and biomedical research into market-ready solutions remains a critical point of friction in the commercialization pipeline -- limiting the societal and economic impact of groundbreaking discoveries and their impact on human health. Leveraging xleratehealth's years of foundational experience working with healthcare startups and academic innovators in the life science and biomedical space, coupled with the outputs of our idea regional entrepreneurship development (i-red) phase i sttr GAP assessment, we designed and tested a full suite of entrepreneurial educational commercialization products during phase II of the i-red "pilot project program." i-red phase II sttr demonstrated the effectiveness of our structured, milestone-driven commercialization model, and its ability to transform academic-based faculty, researchers, clinicians, and students into more commercialization-ready innovators. By providing a clear, step-by-step pathway from IP protection to market entry and exit, this effort significantly improved participants' understanding of key business model components, including regulatory approval, reimbursement strategies, investment readiness, and industry partnerships - all critical, yet often overlooked, barriers in life science commercialization. As part of phase II, we gathered input from 2 cohorts (a total of 17 participants) regarding product components that worked well and areas where they would like to see the product further developed for future cohorts. We also identified areas where we could create process efficiencies relative to workflow, coaching, and communications. This phase IIB project "xlerator network - from lab to market: scaling academic innovation for commercial success" builds upon and extends our work from i-red phase II. Our phase IIB specific aims include refining, expanding, and validating the i-red content and 16-week milestone-driven program (including the sbir/sttr 1:1 coaching program that runs parallel to the i-red program), our talent matching service (XOR®), and our tech-enabled on-line commercialization platform that houses all the products and services. The high-level outcomes of the proposed i-red phase IIB project will position xleratehealth as a premier national commercialization resource that increases the number of patents secured, IP licensed, capital raised (both non-dilutive and dilutive), FDA approvals provided, reimbursement pathways identified and secured, and either licensees or paying customers identified and secured. Ultimately our goal is for i-red's suite of tech-enabled commercialization services to increase the viability of startups emerging from academic research centers, and accelerate their path from discovery to market -- advancing NIH's mission to translate scientific innovation into improved health outcomes.
