About this award

The National Cancer Institute awarded Informed Medical Decisions, Inc. $1,216,515 on August 14, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to commercialize and integrate INHERET, a web-based cancer risk assessment and clinical management platform, into electronic health record systems.

INHERET expands personalized cancer risk assessment beyond hereditary cancer focus to encompass prevention and screening for individuals at all risk levels across breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers. The platform will integrate with Epic, Cerner, and AthenaOne EHR systems to deliver guidelines-based cancer risk assessment, genetic testing recommendations, and personalized care plans for prevention and early detection. The award funds Phase II of a Small Business Innovation Research grant, building on Phase I work demonstrating feasibility of the enhanced platform.

Informed Medical Decisions, doing business as InformedDNA, acquired INHERET, Inc. in 2024 to integrate, enhance, and commercialize the software. The company provides nationwide clinical cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling, testing, and care management via telehealth.

Performance occurs in St. Petersburg, Florida through July 31, 2028. The project addresses documented gaps in cancer care by reducing barriers to risk assessment, prevention, and screening across provider, patient, and socioeconomic factors that currently prevent most U.S. adults from receiving guidelines-based cancer interventions.

Description

Abstract
Inheret is a web-based cancer risk assessment and clinical management program that is currently focused on hereditary cancer risk. In 2024, lnformeddna, a well-established nationwide medical practice offering clinical cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling, testing and care management via telehealth, acquired inhere!, INC. To integrate, enhance and commercialize the software to address current gaps in cancer care, beginning with breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, pancreatic and ovarian cancer. Breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer were the top four most commonly diagnosed cancers in 2024, with breast, lung, colorectal and pancreatic cancer diagnoses also responsible for approximately 50% of all cancer deaths. Despite the advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment over the past 20 years, most US adults still do not receive the guidelines-based assessments or interventions for cancer. Barriers to risk assessment, prevention, screening and early detection include provider, patient and socioeconomic factors that the proposed enhanced platform will address. Inheret aims to lower the burden and costs of cancer by providing a comprehensive solution for individuals at all risk levels (high, moderate and average) by ensuring accurate guidelines-based cancer risk assessment, genetic testing, and provision of personalized care plans for prevention and screening/early detection. This direct to phase II sbir project aims to 1) expand inheret's current focus on providing risk assessment for hereditary cancers to also include care plans for prevention and screening for individuals at all levels of risk for all cancers for which there are nccn guidelines for enhanced screening and prevention and 2) integrate with epic, cerner and athenaone electronic health record (EHR) systems. The product will be a dynamic precision health platform that is user-friendly for patients and providers, with tiered levels of patient acquisition and engagement centered around proactive identification of individuals at risk for cancers, whether germline or sporadic. The outcomes will be educating and empowering patients and providers to drive informed decision-making and address the gaps in achieving guidelines-based risk assessment and care. Integration of inheret within our robust health system/laboratory/employer lines of business and pipeline will expedite and expand access to cancer risk assessment, education, genetic testing, preventive care and cascade screening. As an EHR-integrated application, inheret will have a population-scale impact.
