The award funds translational pre-clinical research and development of a 3D-printed skin and bone integrated pylon (SBIP-3D) for direct skeletal attachment of limb prostheses. The technology, developed by Poly Orth International, integrates with both residual bone...
- The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Penderia Technologies Inc. $306,722 on September 19, 2025, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to fabricate and characterize a distal femoral fracture fixation plate featuring an implantable, battery-free wireless sensor for intra- and postoperative monitoring of fixation plate strains. The project targets personalized postoperative...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded the University of Arizona $1,149,088 on September 19, 2025, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to refine a computational surgical decision tool for vertebral body tethering (VBT), a growth-modulating surgical technique for correcting pediatric spinal deformities. The project develops and validates a patient-specific computational model to predict which children...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) awarded a Project Grant of $158,555 to the University of Pittsburgh under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to develop and validate a wireless metamaterial interbody fusion cage for real-time assessment of lumbar spinal fusion. The project, awarded September 1, 2025, with an ultimate completion date of August 31, 2027, addresses current limitations in wireless force...
- The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Rush University Medical Center $643,185 on June 10, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846). The award funds development of validated, patient-specific computational models to predict polyethylene wear in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and identify modifiable surgical, design, and rehabilitation targets to improve implant...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded MDS II LLC $299,996 on September 1, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to develop and commercialize the Rotational Femoral Nail System (RFNS), an orthopedic device designed to prevent and correct rotational malalignment in femoral fractures. The RFNS integrates an adjustable rotational mechanism and goniometer to enable precise intraoperative alignment and...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Baylor College of Medicine $374,000 on August 17, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to investigate the role of the transcription factor TONEBP/NFAT5 in regulating chondrocyte energy availability and extracellular matrix synthesis during postnatal bone growth. The research examines how chondrocytes balance intense matrix production with protein quality...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Northstar Genomics, LLC $286,415 on September 10, 2025, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846). The Phase 1 research project aims to enhance the efficiency of generating human skeletal muscle in pigs for reconstructive and transplantation-based surgeries to treat skeletal muscle loss from trauma, surgery, and deep burns. The recipient's current approach uses somatic...
- This $672,394.58 project grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) supports the development of a crosslinkable tissue particle implant for regenerating craniofacial bone. Led by Leefa Biotech LLC, the one-year award aims to demonstrate improved bone regeneration in critical-size cranial bone defects using the implant compared to the current standard of care. If successful, the...
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Tissuerate Inc. $1.262 million on September 5, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to develop a modular synthetic bone graft technology for large bone defects. Tissuerate will develop and validate a 3D-printed modular bioactive synthetic bone graft based on proprietary osteoinductive HYTEC technology, which enables sustained delivery of BMP2 and has demonstrated superior bone regeneration in preclinical rat and ovine models compared to autografts and rapid-release BMP2 therapies. The recipient will conduct efficacy testing in a sheep critical-sized defect model, establish GLP-compliant device manufacturing protocols, and demonstrate healing acceleration relative to autografts. Successful outcomes are expected to enable commercialization of the bioactive graft as a solution addressing the significant clinical need for large bone defect repair, which currently affects nearly half a million of the 7 million patients annually who suffer orthopedic trauma in the United States. Work is performed in Cupertino, California, with a period of performance through August 31, 2028.
