Vulintus, Inc. was awarded a $1,025,456 Project Grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke within the Department of Health and Human Services to develop the SensiTrak system. The grant was funded under the 21st Century Cures Act Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies program. Under this award, Vulintus will create an automated, high-throughput behavioral testing platform to precisely measure somatosensory function in rodent models. Current methods often rely on withdrawal responses to unpleasant stimuli, which can be stressful for animals and yield high variability. SensiTrak aims to support complex, electromechanical interactions with trained, voluntary animal behaviors through interchangeable task modules, peripherals, and open-source software. In the initial phase, Vulintus will finalize the SensiTrak prototype design, conduct bench testing, and validate the system using a rat model of somatosensory impairment. The grant period runs from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2022.
