Current X-ray CT instruments...
- The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Texas at Arlington $339,676 on August 18, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop light-responsive osmium compounds as metallo-reagents for biomedical imaging and photoactivation. The project develops osmium-based...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) Project Grant awarded $274,440 to Vine Medical Inc., a for-profit manufacturing company, to develop a proof-of-concept for a self-deploying endotracheal intubation device. The proposed soft robotics system aims to achieve over a 90% first-pass intubation success rate, which would improve patient outcomes and reduce complications during emergency airway management procedures. The device is designed to...
- The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded Northwestern University $255,297 on September 15, 2025, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop vertical MRI technology for safe imaging of children with cardiac implantable electronic devices. The project addresses a critical clinical gap: infants and children with congenital heart defects who receive epicardial leads—implanted...
- The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded Rice University $182,736 on August 3, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop a multi-modal, multi-depth, high-resolution micro-endoscope (M3D-HRME) for early cancer detection. The project pursues feasibility studies to create optical micro-endoscopic devices capable of detecting early-stage cancer by combining advances in...
- The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded the University of Texas at Arlington $378,411 on April 1, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop super-resolution tomographic imaging technology for deep tissue visualization. The project aims to overcome diffraction limits inherent in existing super-resolution imaging modalities—including super-resolution fluorescence...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $256,000 Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I Project Grant to develop a minimally invasive articulating intubation stylet. The grant period runs from June 15, 2021 through May 31, 2022 under the Engineering (47.041) program. This program aims to foster innovation and excellence in engineering research and education across various fields. Funds will support the awardee, located in Blaine, Minnesota, to research and develop a new medical device...
The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $307,596 to Et-Trac LLC on September 1, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop a cost-effective near-infrared (NIR) imaging device for continuous, noninvasive tracking of endotracheal tube position in pediatric patients. The award funds refinement of the NIR-ETT device, which displays accurate endotracheal tube position in real time and alerts care teams when the tube moves beyond a preset limit. Accidental tube displacement poses significant risk in critically ill children recovering from surgery or requiring ventilation in emergency rooms and intensive care units, particularly in newborns and young children with shorter tracheas. The recipient team previously demonstrated proof-of-concept using two detection strategies—a detector board and a dual-camera module—in animal studies with high accuracy. This Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) award supports further device refinement based on the dual-camera method, development of a proprietary Python application, and prototype advancement toward clinical and mass-production feasibility. The device builds on an earlier NIH/NICHD R21 grant and pending U.S. patent. Et-Trac LLC, headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, is performing the work. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2027.
