The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded the University of Washington $206,318 on August 15, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to design and pilot implementation models for delivering lenacapavir long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to people who use drugs in street medicine settings. The award funds a Type 1 R34 implementation research pilot conducted across two established, low-barrier mobile outreach programs in Everett, Washington: the Emergency Mobile Opioid Team Everett (EMOTE), led by peers with lived experience in drug use and exchange sex and offering immediate linkage to substance use and mental health treatment; and the Harm Reduction Center (HRC) Street Medicine Van, led by medical practitioners and providing street-based advanced wound care, buprenorphine, phlebotomy, infectious disease testing and treatment, and other medical services. The study addresses implementation barriers to lenacapavir engagement, follow-up, and acceptability among vulnerable populations in communities that lack extensive HIV prevention infrastructure. Research activities include formative work guided by the Consolidated Framework 2.0 for Implementation Research, convening a community advisory board and focus groups to co-design two tailored PrEP engagement models that maximize the unique characteristics of each program. The University of Washington Office of Sponsored Programs serves as the recipient. Work is performed in Seattle, Washington through June 30, 2029.
