This $1,393,769 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) aims to develop and assess a patient-centered approach to improve access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), antiretroviral therapy (ART), and substance use disorder (SUD) services for persons who use drugs (PWUD) involved in the criminal justice system. The 5-year study, led by Yale University, will begin with a 1-year pilot in Connecticut to develop and test a menu of patient choice options for accessing PrEP/ART and SUD treatment services, compared to standard patient navigation alone. The pilot will inform a subsequent 4-year, 4-site (Connecticut, Kentucky, and 2 in Texas) hybrid implementation-effectiveness study, which will evaluate patient-level outcomes like accessing clinicians and treatment, as well as system-level implementation outcomes including acceptability, adoption, penetration, sustainment, and costs. This research has the potential to improve engagement in HIV and SUD services for this critically underserved population.
