Description

Activities
Reclamation is partnering with the california state university fresno foundation to build hydrus models to better understand the dynamics of the soil salinization and leaching process within sjrip. The proposed project will proceed in two stages the first stage will utilize the public domain, 1-d transient version of the model hydrus model and concentrate on assimilating requisite field data to allow realistic model simulations to be formulated. During the second year of the project salinity mapping data will be used to initialize a 3-d version of the model on each of the experimental fields. IT is the california state university fresno foundations responsibility to provide an archive of 3 years of previously collected field data and collect 2 years of additional field data to be used through this agreement during the project period.deliverables and expected outcomes: 1.) a hydrus-1D calibrated model of the sjrip applied to four experimental fields in the sjrip using multiple years of field collected data.2.) open-source, documented 3D GIS soil mapping pipeline executed in python code.3.) an archive of 3 years of previously collected field data (existing data) and 2 years of additional field data to be collected and analyzed by the project partners via this agreement with the california state university fresno during the project period. The hydrus 1D model, 3D soil mapping GIS workflows, and the field collected data will be immediately applied in reclamations ongoing collaborations with the grassland water district, the CV-salts salt control program, the ptms interested parties, the SAN joaquin valley drainage authority, the california state water resources control board and central valley regional water resources control board. All these entities will directly use these work products for decision-making, both in terms of managing the sjrip itself and identifying other potential salinity management areas throughout the central valley.upon implementation of the project, reclamation team members and contractors will both provide modeling use support and transfer to the interested parties identified above. The results of this application will provide physics-informed decision making around the sustainability of the sjrip facility and will provide the basis for future discussions around the effects of future climate-induced hydrologic extreme events on the system.beneficiaries: the publicsubrecipient activities (if known or specified at time of award): n a
