The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $3,531,848 Project Grant under the Reclamation States Emergency Drought Relief program (CFDA 15.514) to The California Land Stewardship Institute, in partnership with the City of Ukiah Water Department in Mendocino County, California. The grant will fund the expansion of a surface water-groundwater model for the Ukiah Valley Basin to simulate drought conditions and management actions, creating a decision support tool to coordinate water manager actions and protect instream flows for threatened steelhead trout while providing drought resiliency for the Ukiah Valley community. Additionally, the grant will support the construction of a supplemental groundwater well for the City of Ukiah, which has experienced drought conditions in 8 of the last 10 years and was limited to only groundwater supplies in 2021 due to surface water curtailments. The project aligns with the 2020 Drought Agreement with multiple Ukiah-area water users and the City's 2020 Urban Water Management Plan.
