The Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $3,495,000 Project Grant to the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) under the Reclamation States Emergency Drought Relief program (CFDA 15.514). The grant will fund SNWA's efforts to expand its Septic System Conversion Program, which incentivizes property owners to abandon onsite septic systems and connect to the public sewer system. These conversions increase water supplies by allowing more discharge water to enter the municipal wastewater system, where it can be collected, treated, and released to the Las Vegas Wash for ultimate reuse in Lake Mead. The project will enable SNWA to incentivize up to 103 septic-to-sewer conversions, which are expected to increase water supplies by approximately 16 acre-feet per year. This aligns with SNWA's Water Resource Plan, which identifies septic conversion as a key strategy for optimizing return-flow credits and building drought resiliency in Southern Nevada, which has experienced extended drought since 2000.
