The Coachella Valley Water District will receive $404,000 under a Project Grant from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation's Applied Science Grants program to update the Coachella Valley Salt and Nutrient Management Plan. Working with seven partner agencies in Southern California's Coachella Valley Basin, the District will develop water management tools to model and forecast nitrate and total dissolved solids concentrations in groundwater. Products delivered under the award will include characterization of nutrient and total dissolved solids loading and current groundwater quality, delineation of management zones and metrics to assess beneficial use protection, development of a technical approach and tools to forecast concentrations, and establishment of baseline scenario forecasts of future groundwater quality conditions. Upon completion, the model and baseline scenarios will be available for use by partner agencies, including the Cities of Coachella and Palm Springs, Desert Water Agency, Indio Water Authority, Mission Springs Water District, Myoma Dunes Mutual Water Company, and Valley Sanitary District, to evaluate future mitigation strategies and sustainably manage water quality to support decision making and resiliency in the subbasin.
