This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under CFDA 93.865 Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research provides $213,209 to Auburn University to conduct a single-arm pilot clinical trial. The goal is to evaluate tactics for mitigating relapse of severe problem behaviors, such as self-injury and aggression, in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Key mitigation tactics to be examined include multiple context training, incorporation of extinction-correlated stimuli, caregiver fading procedures, and competing stimuli during schedule thinning. The research team will use a single-case experimental design to assess the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of these relapse-mitigation approaches in the context of functional communication training. A subaward of $XX,XXX was provided to the Hugo W. Moser Research Institute at Kennedy Krieger, Inc. to support this effort. The 2-year project began on September 1, 2024 and is scheduled for completion on August 31, 2026.
