The National Eye Institute (NEI) awarded a $226,135 Project Grant (CFDA 93.867 - Vision Research) to The University of Iowa to evaluate the in vivo efficacy, safety, and cellular activity of an engineered transfer RNA (tRNA) for treating hereditary eye diseases caused by nonsense mutations. The project aims to assess the ability of this engineered tRNA to rescue eye diseases, including pigment dispersing iris disease and retinal degeneration, in transgenic mouse models. It will also characterize any potential abnormalities induced by the engineered tRNA and identify any cell-type specific impacts on protein translation. The award period runs from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.
