The National Eye Institute (NEI) awarded a $244,015 Project Grant (CFDA 93.867 - Vision Research) to The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (Upstate Medical Center) to develop a first-in-class "TM/SC-Interface-on-a-Chip" microfluidic platform for mechanistic studies of aqueous humor outflow regulation. The novel 3D tissue platform aims to accurately recapitulate the complex microenvironment and segmental elasticity profile of the trabecular meshwork (TM) and Schlemm's canal (SC) interface, enabling quantitative real-time measurements and end-point testing. Under a sub-grant, Syracuse University will perform the design, fabrication, and characterization of the microfluidic devices with embedded TM cells to optimize co-culture conditions with SC endothelial cells.
