The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) has awarded a $693,156 Project Grant (CFDA 93.286 Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health) to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Inc. (DFCI) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for predicting prognosis and optimizing treatment selection for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), a highly prevalent form of skin cancer. The project aims to train and validate AI models using a unique dataset of 1,360 CSCC tumors with corresponding histopathology slides, clinical outcomes, and known risk factors. The models will first predict the presence of poor prognostic factors, then directly predict patient prognosis, with the goal of identifying new prognostic biomarkers. The project will also validate the AI models' performance and conduct a clinical integration simulation study. Successful completion of this project would contribute to reducing the burden of CSCC, which affects millions of patients annually, through the development of innovative computational pathology methods for prognosis prediction.
