The University of New Hampshire (UNH) was awarded a $426,509 Project Grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286). The grant, awarded on September 21, 2023, will fund the development of an injectable microporous hydrogel for delivering neural stem cells to regenerate damaged neural tissues, such as from spinal cord injuries. The key products and services to be delivered include: Synthesis and optimization of an injectable microgel-based hydrogel formulation that rapidly cures upon UV irradiation and promotes high viability, spreading, and neuronal differentiation of encapsulated neural stem cells. Fabrication and integration of a bioelectronic mesh (BioEM) device that will monitor the development of functional neural networks formed by the encapsulated neural stem cells within the hydrogel scaffold. UNH has subcontracted with Tufts University to perform the BioEM-related studies, including device fabrication, tissue hybrid characterization, and electrophysiological data recording and analysis. The goal is to develop a novel hydrogel system with embedded bioelectronics to enable real-time evaluation and optimization of neural tissue regeneration.
