The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) awarded $422,125 to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to conduct a two-year research project examining oral nicotine pouch (ONP) use and health effects among adolescents and young adults (AYAs). The project, which commenced on July 1, 2026 and concludes June 30, 2028, will harmonize nationally representative population data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study waves 7-9 (2022-2025) with restricted biomarker data to investigate longitudinal patterns of ONP initiation, transitions to other tobacco and substance use behaviors, biomarkers of exposure to tobacco-related toxicants, and nicotine dependence among youths ages 12-24. This research addresses a critical gap in evidence regarding ONP use trends, which has risen sharply among adolescents and young adults despite limited knowledge of associated risk factors, protective factors, and health consequences. The research will identify risk and protective factors associated with ONP initiation across multiple domains including individual characteristics, marketing exposure, social influences, and neighborhood-level factors. Given that ONP was the second most used tobacco product among U.S. youth in 2023 and young adult monthly use doubled from 1.6% to 3.2% between 2022 and 2023, this NIDA-funded investigation will generate essential epidemiological evidence to inform public health policy and regulatory decision-making regarding this rapidly proliferating nicotine delivery product among youth populations.Federal Grant Award Summary
