INTEGRATION OF HEPATITIS B PREVENTIVE INTERVENTIONS INTO COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICES IN A RESOURCE-LIMITED SETTING: A PILOT STUDY - PROJECT SUMMARY CHRONIC HEPATITIS B IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF LIVER CANCER IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA (SSA). DESPITE BEING PREVENTABLE, HEPATITIS B CONTINUES TO BE A SILENT EPIDEMIC IN SSA AS THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE ARE NOT VACCINATED AND THE INFECTED PERSONS ARE NOT DIAGNOSED. HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION PROGRAMS IN SSA HAVE REMAINED PREDOMINANTLY FACILITY-BASED, LIMITING ACCESS AND SERVICE COVERAGE RATES. WHILE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES FOR HEPATITIS B PREVENTION AND CONTROL IN SSA ARE COST-EFFECTIVE, FEW EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHES TO DECENTRALIZE HEPATITIS B PREVENTIVE INTERVENTIONS TO COMMUNITIES ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE. COMMUNITY PHARMACISTS ARE INCREASINGLY INVOLVED IN THE DELIVERY OF PUBLIC HEALTH INTERVENTIONS, AND OFFER AN UNTAPPED OPPORTUNITY TO DECENTRALIZE HEPATITIS B PREVENTION IN SSA. HOWEVER, COMMUNITY PHARMACIST-LED HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION HAS RECEIVED LITTLE ATTENTION TO DATE. CONSEQUENTLY, LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES AND EFFECTIVENESS OF INTEGRATING HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION INTO COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICES. ACCORDINGLY, THIS PILOT STUDY AIMS TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF INTEGRATING HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION INTO COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICES IN NIGERIA. GUIDED BY THE EXPLORATION, PREPARATION, IMPLEMENTATION, SUSTAINMENT AND REACH, EVALUATION, ADOPTION, IMPLEMENTATION, AND MAINTENANCE FRAMEWORKS, OUR SPECIFIC AIMS ARE TO: 1) CO-CREATE IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES TO INTEGRATE HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION INTO ROUTINE COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICES. USING IMPLEMENTATION MAPPING, WE WILL ENGAGE STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING COMMUNITY PHARMACISTS, IMPLEMENTING PARTNERS, POLICYMAKERS, AND PATIENT ADVOCATES TO IDENTIFY IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES TO INTEGRATE HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICES. 2) IMPLEMENT AND EVALUATE THE INTEGRATION OF HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION INTO ROUTINE COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICES. WE WILL IMPLEMENT HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION AND USE SEQUENTIAL EXPLANATORY MIXED METHODS DESIGN TO ASSESS: (I) IMPLEMENTATION OUTCOMES, INCLUDING: (A) REACH: RECEIPT OF HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION; (B) EFFECTIVENESS: COMPLETION OF HEPATITIS B VACCINATION PRIMARY SERIES; (C) ADOPTION: UPTAKE OF INTEGRATED HEPATITIS B PREVENTION SERVICES BY COMMUNITY PHARMACIES; (D) IMPLEMENTATION: DEGREE TO WHICH COMMUNITY PHARMACISTS DELIVERED INTEGRATED HEPATITIS B PREVENTION SERVICES ACCORDING TO PROTOCOL; (E) MAINTENANCE: LIKELIHOOD THAT COMMUNITY PHARMACIST-DELIVERED INTEGRATED HEPATITIS B PREVENTION SERVICES WILL BE INSTITUTIONALIZED; AND (II) THE BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS TO THE IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES AND OUTCOMES. THE DECENTRALIZATION OF HEPATITIS B SCREENING AND VACCINATION TO THE COMMUNITIES CAN EXPAND SERVICE COVERAGE AND INCREASE ACCESS TO LIVER CANCER PREVENTION. THIS PROJECT WILL GENERATE PRELIMINARY DATA FOR AN IMPLEMENTATION TRIAL TO TEST THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNITY PHARMACIST-LED SERVICE DELIVERY MODEL FOR HEPATITIS B PREVENTION.
