This federal Project Grant award of $448,687, provided by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173), supports research to investigate the role of calcium regulation in outer hair cells (OHCs) and their sensitivity to cochlear injury. The research aims to enhance understanding of the mechanisms that protect OHCs, which act as sentinels of cochlear injury, from damage due to noise, aging, and infection - the most common causes of acquired sensorineural hearing loss. Specifically, the project will use in vivo functional assays, mRNA/protein analysis, and microscopy techniques in wild-type and OHC-specific calcium-binding protein (oncomodulin) mutant mice to test hypotheses related to OHC calcium signaling, purinergic receptor activity, and cell survival following cochlear injury. The research is being conducted at Baylor University and is expected to be completed by November 7, 2027.
