Project Grant R13DK149493
- The National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute awarded Clark Atlanta University, Inc., $194,929 on July 1, 2026, under the Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398) to examine the mechanisms of response to anti-androgen therapies in aggressive prostate cancer. The project investigates why patients with aggressive prostate cancer initially respond strongly to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) but ultimately develop resistance and progress to castration-resistant prostate cancer...
- The National Institutes of Health Office of the Director awarded the University of California Irvine $863,500 on September 18, 2025, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to develop anti-fibrogenic therapy targeting aging-associated urethral dysfunction. The research investigates mechanisms by which aging impairs urethral physiology and urinary continence in women. Preliminary studies in aged female mice demonstrated substantially lower functional leak point pressure and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Biological Infrastructure awarded the University of Iowa $465,000 on December 1, 2026, under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to establish a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site in interdisciplinary evolutionary science. The program will train 10 undergraduate students per summer for 10 weeks during the summers of 2027–2029, with a total of 30 students anticipated to participate, primarily from schools with limited research...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Marshall University Research Corporation $221,250 on July 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the functional redundancy and activation mechanisms of enterococcal proteases in catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The research addresses how secreted metalloproteases and serine proteases produced by Enterococcus faecalis enable biofilm formation and tissue invasion...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc. $475,475 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate neural mechanisms underlying nocturia-related arousals in aging. The recipient will conduct research examining why 60–70 percent of individuals aged 60 and older experience frequent nighttime bladder emptying trips despite absence of urodynamic dysfunction. The study hypothesizes that decreased arousal threshold...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University $138,272 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to support investigator training and research on bone morphogenetic protein 5 (BMP5) in benign prostatic hyperplasia. The project develops the recipient investigator's technical and professional skills to establish an independent research career focused on...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $216,203 on June 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to establish a research and mentoring program for surgical care of older adults. The recipient will leverage existing infrastructure and resources at Weill Cornell Medicine–New York Presbyterian to support and train surgeon scientists focused on older adult surgical patients, with particular emphasis on those from difficult social...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Cedars-Sinai Medical Center $1.569 million on March 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate estrogen signaling mechanisms in urinary tract infection-related delirium in postmenopausal women. The research determines neuroprotective molecular mechanisms of 17-beta-estradiol by utilizing estrogen receptor knockout strains to isolate beneficial effects in mitigating UTI-induced delirium. The project tests bazedoxifene, an...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University $212,332 on May 1, 2026, under the Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398) to support Dr. Aaron Dawes as a mentored career development investigator focusing on access and quality of specialty cancer care. The award funds mentorship, training, and applied research to develop Dawes as an independent investigator examining the impact of Medicaid managed care (MMC) on treatment and clinical outcomes for patients...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded the University of Connecticut Health Center $130,275 on April 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate the role of TRPM7-mediated signaling in vascular remodeling and abdominal aortic aneurysm pathogenesis. The research examines how TRPM7, a chanzyme expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells, contributes to the disease mechanism in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a condition affecting 1–2...
2026 AMERICAN UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, INC. EARLY-CAREER INVESTIGATORS WORKSHOP - 2026 AMERICAN UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION EARLY-CAREER INVESTIGATORS WORKSHOP PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT THE 2026 AMERICAN UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (AUA) EARLY-CAREER INVESTIGATOR WORKSHOP (ECIW) WILL BE HELD FALL 2026, AT THE AUA HEADQUARTERS IN LINTHICUM, MARYLAND. THE WORKSHOP WILL PROVIDE INTENSE, INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION FOR A GROUP OF THIRTY PROMISING EARLY-CAREER MD (OR EQUIVALENT) SURGEON-INVESTIGATORS AND PHD SCIENTISTS PREPARING FOR CAREERS IN UROLOGIC-DISEASE FOCUSED RESEARCH. ELIGIBILITY IS INCLUSIVE OF CLINICAL UROLOGY SUB-SPECIALTY FELLOWS, POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWS, AND EARLY-CAREER FACULTY. APPLICANTS WILL BE SELECTED BY A PEER REVIEW PROCESS. IN RESPONSE TO PAST PARTICIPANT DATA TRENDS, ECIW WILL ALSO ACCEPT EXCEPTIONALLY QUALIFIED ACGME RESIDENTS TRAINING IN UROLOGY AND PHD CANDIDATE APPLICANTS IN 2026. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ASSIGNED INTO THE EARLY OR ADVANCED TRACKS TO EXPERIENCE AN OPTIMIZED CURRICULUM BASED ON RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND EXPECTED TIMELINE FOR FEDERAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT OR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR RESEARCH GRANT SUBMISSION. PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE INSTRUCTION IN PREPARATION OF INNOVATIVE AND COMPETITIVE RESEARCH GRANT PROPOSALS, PRIMARILY TO THE NIH WITH EMPHASIS ON GRANTS FOCUSED ON UROLOGIC DISEASES. ALL ATTENDEES WILL BE APPROPRIATELY AND THOUGHTFULLY PAIRED WITH A FACULTY MENTOR. ECIW COURSE DIRECTORS (N= 2) AND PROGRAM FACULTY (N=6) SERVE AS HANDS-ON RESEARCH PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT MENTORS, DIDACTIC LECTURE SPEAKERS, AND INTERACTIVE SESSION PROCTORS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FIVE-PART HYBRID VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON CURRICULUM. THESE INDIVIDUALS WERE CAREFULLY SELECTED TO ENSURE AN EXEMPLARY RECORD IN ACHIEVING ONGOING, INDEPENDENT NIH RESEARCH FUNDING.
