The National Cancer Institute awarded a $157,000 Project Grant (CFDA 93.396, Cancer Biology Research) to Michigan State University's Henry Ford Health+Michigan State University Health Sciences partnership, effective June 1, 2026, through May 31, 2028. The project will develop a human pluripotent stem cell (HPSC)-derived preclinical model for NUT carcinoma (NC), a devastating cancer currently lacking effective treatments. Leveraging genetic designs demonstrated in existing genetically engineered mouse models, the research team will create human pluripotent stem cell lines that recapitulate the BRD4::NUTM1 fusion gene characteristic of approximately 70 percent of NC cases. This research addresses critical translational gaps in NC drug development by overcoming evolutionary constraints inherent to mouse models, which limit the effectiveness of testing CRISPR-Cas9-based gene therapy agents, NUTM1-degrading molecular glues, and other targeting therapies. The human cell-derived model will enable more accurate identification of BRD4::NUTM1 targets and provide a more physiologically relevant platform for evaluating therapeutic candidates than existing animal models, ultimately supporting the development of improved prevention, detection, and treatment methods for this aggressive malignancy.Federal Grant Award Summary
