- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Arizona $1,764,771 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the pathological relevance of TDP-43 interactions with translation machinery in neurodegeneration. The award funds research into TDP-43 proteinopathy, which is characterized by mislocalization of tar DNA-binding protein 43 from the nucleus to the...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Wisconsin–Madison $427,625 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The recipient is conducting basic research to understand how axon guidance genes contribute to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), two neurodegenerative disorders that share a clinical disease spectrum. The research focuses...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Washington University $162,000 on March 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to identify and characterize new therapy targets in TDP-43 proteinopathies. The award supports research into the mechanisms by which TDP-43 mislocalization results in neuronal death and aims to discover previously unidentified therapy targets that mediate this disease process. TDP-43 pathology is observed across multiple neurodegenerative diseases...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Illinois $528,643 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate inhibition of specific kinases in the p38 MAPK pathway module as a potential treatment for genetic forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The project focuses on axonal degeneration, an early pathological event in ALS. Prior research documented...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Northwestern University received a $438,606 Project Grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853), effective August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2027. The research project focuses on establishing induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-based models to investigate the mechanistic interaction between neurotrauma and amyotrophic...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill $210,513 on July 20, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to characterize molecular products of TDP-43 dysfunction as neuroinflammatory targets in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia (ALS-FTD). The research investigates the interplay between TDP-43 dysfunction and antigen generation that drives maladaptive neuroinflammation in ALS-FTD. The work comprises two aims:...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded $3,081,936 to the University of California, San Diego on September 12, 2025, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program. This Project Grant, with a completion date of June 30, 2029, supports research investigating the mechanisms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) through multimodal...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded $460,625 to the University of Massachusetts Medical School on June 1, 2025, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to support a two-year research investigation through May 31, 2027. The project, titled "Investigating the Role of TDP-43 Citrullination in ALS Pathogenesis," focuses on understanding how...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded $460,625 to the University of Massachusetts Medical School on June 7, 2025, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program. This exploratory research project, scheduled for completion by May 31, 2027, investigates the roles of the deubiquitylation pathway in TDP-43 (TAR DNA-binding protein 43) pathology relevant to...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the Department of Health and Human Services awarded Yale University $446,670 on May 6, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop and validate bi-functional helical peptides that inhibit TDP-43 aggregation. TDP-43 mislocalization and aggregation is central to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Northwestern University $620,507 on August 14, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the association between TDP-43 dependent disruptions in RNA metabolism and neuronal excitability in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The research tests the hypothesis that TDP-43 dependent splicing errors on UNC13A and KCNQ2 messenger RNAs trigger neuronal dysfunction underlying motor neuron hyperexcitability observed in ALS/FTD patients. TDP-43, a nuclear RNA-binding protein, shows pathological nuclear depletion and cytoplasmic aggregation in approximately 97 percent of ALS cases and 50 percent of FTD cases. The investigation focuses on how mis-splicing of KCNQ2 (which encodes a potassium channel regulating action potential frequency) and UNC13A (which encodes a protein critical to synaptic vesicle release) correlates with TDP-43 pathology and disease metrics in patient postmortem central nervous system tissue. Work is performed in Chicago, Illinois. The period of performance runs from August 14, 2026, through May 31, 2031. Northwestern University's Sponsored Research Division serves as the recipient organization.
